Tenchi had two good series and two decent movies. Everything else has been a waste of time. Sigh.

Between Fortnite, Call of Duty, Minecraft, and Elden Ring, I've heard more about the entire cultural zeitgeist in these 4 games (among others, like Undertale or Pokemon), for games I've never played.

Whatever makes money I guess. Where's my Anya Forger playing with Nanako in Persona 4 crossover...

It would be nice if anime and LNs would stop the goofy titles thing.

I finished RWBY: Ice Queendom. It was...fine, I suppose. The action scenes and new take on the older material was good enough. It was also nice seeing practically every RT actor reprising their roles, so it didn't have this weird "but no" stigma for being a different show. I don't think the new story arc came across very well though. Rather than threatening and intense, it came off kinda goofy and lacking cohesion. It didn't help it was about 3-4 episodes of material stretched out to 8. I hate when shows have to go long when they don't have the meat for it. Quotas I suppose. It scratched the itch of not having Volume 9 this year, but not much else.

Onto something else now. Maybe I'll dive back into re-watch territory for a few shows.

Case Study of Vanitas finished, and good lord. If not for SpyxFamily, it'd be the best thing I've watched all year. I need another season like now.

Onto RWBY: Ice Queendom. This is going to feel like a fever dream, hearing the same actresses do the same stuff a decade later, only to splinter off into a new timeline. But hey, Vol. 9 isn't out yet. I need my RWBY fix.

Persona 5 Royal
Final Fantasy VI
Lufia II
Ys VIII

Two modern classics and my two favorite SNES titles. Didn't want P4 and FFX clogging the other two spots. Lufia II and Ys VIII are too freaking good.

I've heard of people torpedoing their own career for stuff like weird behavior at conventions, cancel culture just being annoying and not leaving you alone, or completely being an asshole. I do not remember a time where someone made a stink to draw up this much sympathy, just to own goal themselves a week later.

The spirit of the argument still holds true. Video game and anime voice acting is not a profitable "business." I remember Tony Oliver saying he makes a six figure income, but that's due to acting, conventions, script writing, ADR work, etc. He and the Bakers, Baileys, etc are the luckier ones. But just being a complete doofus doesn't make the industry look better. It just makes Taylor look desperate and weird.

They would do well to stay away from "open world" from now on. FFXV devolved into, "Oh, here's another batch of 5-10 enemies to fight that are higher level than me." It was a fetch quest disguised as letting you do whatever you wanted. The only good part about that was riding the car and listening to FF music. XV suffers mightly from not explaining anything, or going long stretches without doing so. When the game forces you down the final 3rd, you at least finally get some shreds of motivation and intrigue. I just think "open world" only works in something like Yakuza, when it is such a condensed map with 50 million things to do. XV tried to be "expansive," but ended up boring.

I'll take FF7R's approach. It had some sidequests, but kept the focus on the characters and their story.

8, because the setting and plot lended itself to a near perfect drip feed of exploration. You're invested in getting Adol, Dogi, and so many others off that fucking island, just for the proper plot to seep in as it needs to. Add in a crafting system that geared itself towards the setting organically, and some awesome music (by a series that already boasts serious cred as is), and VIII was just magical.

Outside of Persona 5, it was my favorite game last decade.

Falcom certainly following Atlus's strategy of porting everything to everything. Then again, American companies started all this first.

I already have the PS4 versions of both VIII/XI and they ran fine to me.

Berseria and Arise.

Never really enjoyed the older ones. I usually hear Symphonia, Abyss, and Vesperia mentioned. Those 3D line battle systems are rough to me (the line mechanic is hit or miss). I prefer Berseria and Arise because they have free movement around the field.

And then Tales left it completely in the dust. Fitting, since I believe Star Ocean was a ripoff or clone made by ex members of the Phantasia team.

Sakuraba not withstanding (who composes for both), SO is just in this weird ass holding pattern of shovelware. Berseria and Arise alone prove Tales has far more quality control, especially lately.

Then again, I'm not saying Takes wasn't always better. I just think by and large, even Tales's lesser entries are better. People swear by Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia, and Graces, though I wasn't really wowed by those.

Still, when Star Ocean's claim to fame is one of the worst plot twists ever, you really fucked up. The sad thing is SO3 has this stupid charm to it too. Why they had to ruin it with the twist is beyond me.

Be forewarned that the PS4 SO3 port has some weird crashing bug that seems to happen depending on map usage. It doesn't have autosave either.

Not sure if they ever patched that out. Probably wouldn't, knowing Square.

It's boilerplate "Here's what P5 would be without all the extra fixings and stuffing." The ideas at play are generalized Persona stuff. It's still good to see the Phantom Thieves. They have their moments, but again; this is basic spinoff junk leftovers.

Breath of Fire III is a B+/A- game across the board. Everything is does is solid, including the story. It does a good job of raising the stakes when things need to. It gets dark in spots. It gets very introspective at the end, and the final boss and their motivations are done extremely well.
