I will start by saying I'd experienced bugs and rendering issues within the first hour in the most up-to-date version of Violet.

...but also, it wasn't game breaking. Worth a chuckle at most. Just moving my character forward a little bit has *fixed* whatever bug or issue I'd encounter.

That said, I'm already having fun in Violet. And I feel like I'm gonna enjoy it a lot more as I dig deeper in.

Wanted to thank everyone for all the input.

Fired up my Vita and played the OG, at some point and time I'd put 9 hours into that so I figured that would be the quickest way to check this off my list... but man its hard to play without the new QoL. I don't have that in me like teen me did. Moved onto modding the PC Steam version... which went smoothly (minus some crazy DLL bs for the music mod on SteamOS) but I still wasn't quite satisfied.

So I bought the remaster.

Two hours in and I feel like this is the way. I hear there's some modding that can be done on remaster to make the backgrounds less disorienting, so I may do that too.

Here's hoping I like the game better this time around. Thank you all again.

its one of my favorite games, but just be prepared for that orphanage scene again. It hasnt changed, and if it pissed you off before, it probably will again lol
I'm just gonna brace myself and hope that part of the game isn't as bad as I remember lol

The version where you play literally any other game than FFVIII.

It's a very shit game.
To be fair... I die consider skipping. Ultimately decided it's been long enough that I should at least give it another chance.

I got 100% on both PC versions of FF8 and I'd recommend the more recent version so you don't have to waste an entire weekend grinding
So there absolutely are QoL improvements that make it at least a little less... sloggy?

I'm not new to VIII. Played it way back when it was still a *new* game on PS1... after enjoying disc 1 thoroughly and feeling so~so about most of what happened after, I got to the orphanage exposition dump and I hated that story arc so much that I stopped playing the game...

...not that it mattered, because I fell victim to a demo disc that corrupted both my memory cards, killing all my progress in Final Fantasy 4-9, Tactics...as well as Alundra 1&2, Lunar 2, Persona 1&2EP, a save where I'd cleared Threads of Fate's NG+ at least 10 times, Ehrgeiz story, Brave Fencer Musashi and a lot more... while I did beat FFIV and VII... I haven't touched most of those games in over 15 years because of that card corruption.

But this year I'm playing through the FF games I either left incomplete or never started. All the mainline games and I'll be playing a considerable amount of side games too... crossed off TAY last month, and I'll play games like 4 Heroes of Light, Revenant Wings, Strangers of Paradise and the like whenever it feels appropriate to play them... I'm really psyched to dig into Dimensions actually... for being just a phone game, the hour or so I've put in has me anticipating that I may like it more than FFV.

Just beat Final Fantasy VI yesterday. I'm gonna go play something brief in another genre of game to combat RPG burnout (thinking Sonic Lost World)... but after that... VII's already off my list so it'll be time to take a fresh new play through VIII... and that's got me wondering what version of it I should play.

I've got the PC version on my Steam Deck... I don't like what I've played of that version so far, but it's also un-modded. What I'm seeing of mods look like they can change this into the best version of this game (if this is your vote PLEASE recommend mods. I'm just as intimidated as I am intrigued when it comes to VIII mods). I also just have the PS1 classic purchased for my Vita. Vita having substantially better battery life than my Deck is appealing but I also remember how much of a slog VIII can be without those new quality of life improvements. Also also... if Remastered is noticeably better than the other two versions... it's like $8 on Steam so I have no prob buying it again.
