Any other proper platformer you can theoretically do just as well the first time because you're presented with all the visual information you need.
Yeah and this is true for Sonic as well. Sonic absolutely gives you all the visual info you need.

Salrite posted...
you can't possibly know where the path you choose will take you until after you've experienced it over and over.
Why would this be a problem? Each path leads to the end of the stage.

Salrite posted...
A perfect run (without any pause in momentum) can ONLY be done on a replay.
Yeah and I don't see a problem with this... I'd say this actually applies to most good platformers.

adjl posted...
There's some truth to that, but because other platformers don't put quite so much emphasis on speed, that learning curve is more consistently fun. A lot of older Sonic levels fall more toward "this will be fun once I figure it out well enough to go fast," while other platformers manage "figuring this out is fun, and it'll be even more fun once I figure it out well enough to go fast." The flip side, of course, is that once you figure out the Sonic levels, they're designed to let you go super fast and feel awesome, so there is a payoff that isn't necessarily there in a lot of other platformers. The road to get there just isn't the greatest.
That's fair, but I think Genesis Sonic can be plenty fun to learn. These games are actually pretty forgiving, especially compared to a lot of other 8 and 16-bit platformers. You're nearly invulnerable in ball form. You can take all the hits and, as long as you hold on to at least 1 ring, you won't loose a life. Honestly a lot of the time you can totally afford to be a little reckless in these games.

As others have noted, the fact it was built on a speed gimmick is undermined by the fact you can't just play the game quickly until well after you know what you're doing and have gone through levels countless times.
Right... The more you play the game, the more you learn the game, the better/faster you can play it. It's like literally any other platformer.

Nah, they certainly would not have sold as well but they still would have likely gotten about average to good critical reception and still be fondly remembered by a lot of people.

In my experience, older Sonic games tend to be built around the idea of "if you know what you're doing, you can go super fast and it feels awesome." The flip side of that, though, is that if you don't know what you're doing, you're frequently going to break that flow state and be left with platforming and controls that are kind of clunky because they're designed to work for going fast and not for carefully figuring out an unfamiliar level.
I feel this much better describes the newer Sonic games - post Unleashed - rather than the older games. There's nothing clunky about how Sonic controls in the Genesis games.

It also helps that the Genesis games are also pretty forgiving, they're really not that difficult, especially compared to a lot of their contemporaries.

There's a lot of things I dislike about win11 but I'm pretty neutral on the UI, it's mostly fine after I make some quick adjustments.

I hate the new context menu but I can revert it back to the win10 style menu with a registry edit. I'm kinda annoyed that I even need to go into the registry to fix this but whatever. On the other hand, I really really like having tabs in file explorer, this is something windows should have had forever ago.

Mania and 3 & Knuckles are pretty close for me. I think Mania is a better game in some ways but half it's stages are retreads, and while I really like how they went about remixing stages, I have to give the edge to 3 & Knuckles for being a wholly original and cohesive adventure.

Adventure 1 and 2 are still my favorite 3D Sonic games. They're kinda dated and not as polished as many later 3D Sonic games, but I still feel they're the most compelling and the most fun to learn.

Also, the original Sonic Riders goes hard. Easily my favorite Sonic racing game.

Emulation is great and at this point, it honestly is the best experience for a lot of older systems, but I still like to fuck around with original hardware. Lately, I've been getting into more softmodding and ODE's. Last year I finally installed an HDD with FreeMCboot on my PS2 and that has been awesome, really breaths a lot of new life into the system. I also got myself a Brooks adapter for my PS2 which allows me to use all kinds of more modern controllers.

I wish I still had a CRT, and I still might get one at some point but it's not really a priority for me now. I got myself a RetroTINK 2X Pro upscaler and I'm over all pretty happy with it. It does have some kinda annoying limitations though, like not being able to accept 480p video which makes it not really ideal for some later SD era systems like the Gamecube, Xbox, or Wii.

The only edge the remake has for me is the sword not taking up one of your item slots, which really cuts down on menuing. Hero mode is nice too, I guess.

A sonic the hedgehog fanfic.... yeah.

In late 2006, I read a fanfic on the IGN boards called "The Emerald Hill Horror". It was a horror slasher parody deal where tails goes crazy and starts killing other sonic character with a chainsaw and I really liked it, It was pretty ambitious and really funny, or at least my 12 year old self thought it was funny... Fan fiction were a fairly new concept for me at the time and this one was one of the first significant ones I remember reading.

I've been searching for it on and off for years now. I don't think it exists on the internet anymore. I've come across references to it and even some fan art of it but the fanfic itself is lost media as far as I can tell.

Sonic R - Release Date: 18 November 1997
Sonic Adventure - Release Date: December 23, 1998 (JP) & September 9, 1999 (US)

So I doubt Sonic Reused assets from Sonic Adventure (especially as Sonic R was released for the Saturn & Adventure the Dreamcast), but you might be right about Sonic Jam as they were released in the same year for the Saturn.

Also: https://www.sonicstadium.org/forums/topic/21684-about-sonic-jam-r-models/

Loved playing Sonic R on the PC as a kid, still have the soundtrack on my phone, and use Can you Feel the Sunshine as a ringtone.
Well Sonic Adventure started development on the Saturn before switching to the Dreamcast. Sonic Team likely used some of what was done on the Saturn as the basis for the 3D world in Sonic Jam.

And I like Sonic R as well. The controls are kinda weird but they're actually pretty easy to learn, and the level design was really interesting and unique. It really could have used more content though.

The aptly named Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories is objectively a terrible game, with AI that changes its cards on the fly to beat whatever you have, a poorly executed gameplay system, all the best cards locked behind an all but impossible purchase price, and a lethal nonstop boss rush at the endgame. But I loved it at the time and sank possibly thousands of hours into it.

Ever since my save file was deleted somehow I can't bring myself to ever play it again though, because despite what it does right, by all rights it isn't a good game.
I played this a lot back in the day as well and yeah.... it sucks. The game is insanely grindy and the AI cheats really brazenly. It had a really cool atmosphere to it though and the OST was amazing.

It is a weak game because it is blatantly made out of leftover assets for Sonic Adventure. Only five levels is not nearly enough and it is way too easy.
Not so sure about that. Sonic R wasn't made by Sonic Team. You might be thinking of the 3D world in Sonic Jam, which was probably made out of an early build of Adventure.

The engine for Sonic R was originally made for an F1 racing game, which explains why Sonic kinda handles like a car lol.

The bulk of the stages are actually fairly easy... once you get used to the fucked up controls. But even with effectively infinite lives, some of the later stages are absolutely insufferable...

Another game I really dislike that doesn't have the reputation of something like Bubsy 3D would have to be Sonic 4 Episode 1. Easily my least favorite Sonic game. I can't think of a single positive aspect about this game, it's just shocking how bad it turned out. It was originally supposed to be a mobile only game and it should have stayed that way.
