DISHONORABLE MENTION #4 AKA the Second Worst Game of All Time: Ico (PS2, 2001)

I hate you B8. Every game you recommend me is awful. This is why I will never play a Phoenix Wright game. B8 cannot be trusted. Mass Effect 2 is one of the most garbage experiences I ever had gaming. Thanks B8. Deus Ex? Trash. Thanks B8. Odin Sphere? Zzzzzzz. Thanks B8. Ratchet and Clank? Dear god hold my hair while I vomit. Thanks B8. Persona 3. Oh cool emo teens shooting themselves, or was that 4? It sucked too. Thanks B8.

Every game B8 recommends to me I have hated. As such I no longer take any B8 suggestions. If I want to play a game I will. The most horrible example of this is Ico. Why on earth would anyone willingly advertise this game to people they like? They take the single worst experience in games, escort quests, and make it the entire game!? And like many escort quests, the person you are escorting is so insanely stupid they run straight at death every chance they get. Why is every escort quest for a toddler in an adult body? Ico is an ugly game, all grey and brown. The music is boring and unremarkable. Both characters are terrible. The gameplay is slow, unresponsive and insanely dull. Even the times its supposed to feel frantic, its snails paced and you are like ... omg why is this so slow. The story is bad, I think you are meant to care about these two dopes but I just wanted them dead. Games are art, but some art sucks. Remember that the museum here in Ottawa paid 2 million for Voice of Fire.

That cost 2 million dollars. I have seen this piece of shit up close, you can see the tape marks. That is Ico. Ico is something you are told you are to like and look how well it is reviewed or something. You have to like it! You don't get it if you don't like it. No I get it, it sucks.

#11. Borderlands 2 (PS3, 2012)



After playing BL1 alone, I was in love with the series and hyped as heck for a sequel. BL2 is better in every single way. I first played with Icon, and man did he ever spend a lot of time healing me. I am the run in and have no attempt at defense type. Later played with Wigs, Bartz, MSG, TLO and others. BL2 was a game I beat so many times, with multiple groups. We played this at various times over 7 years. Heck they even did a DLC 7 years after the game came out. Handsome Jack was an outstanding villain, Mr. Torgue is one of my all time favorite characters, and the rest of the cast and various one offs are all really good. Oh yeah the DLCs are almost all fantastic this time around. Hammerlock DLC is not good. The rest are excellent, Torgue and Tina DLCs are top tier content. BL2 did a good job of letting people get Legendary items but not making them a drop on every enemy like in BL3. The shooting mechanics are crisp, there is a wide variety of areas and enemies. It boggles my mind that I have a shooter so high up on my list, but here we are.

#12. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES, 1996)

The first RPG I ever played and finished. It has strangely grown on me even more over the years. It was far lower last time I did a top 100, but after revisiting it, I truly love this game. Everything about it just hits. It was the birth of how excellent Bowser is in the RPG games. Mario proving to people that he is Mario by jumping. The combat is engaging and rewarding. The story is a lot of fun and littered with colorful characters. The OST is full of great and very catchy tunes. I love almost every area of this game.

The Forkies are enraptured.

The Forkies have come TO THEIR SENSES!!!!

Man what a great enemy.

One thing I never did get about this game. The insane amounts of love for Geno. Like he isn't bad or anything, be he also basically barely exists. Why do people think he is so awesome?

Anyway I adore this game. Talking about it makes me want to go play it again.

Crono would be slick but I don't think it's as important as you make it out to be. The game is extremely well-regarded among RPG fans but honestly isn't very mainstream and has probably been played by a million people at most. Being on GameFAQs makes the game feel bigger than it is.

#13. Dissidia: Final Fantasy & Dissidia 012: Duodecim (PSP, 2008, 2011)

So I already wrote how the console version is gutter trash. How they messed up the glory that these two games are, I will never know. Literally just port these add a functioning online and boom. Amazing game. Dissidia was the start of Squares trend to tie all the FF games together into one universe. Basically each game restarts the universe so they are all sequels to each other in the loosest terms. After the 12th time it triggered a battle between Chaos and Cosmos and they summon the strongest heroes from the previous 12 worlds. In Duodecim this also includes 13. I absolutely love the interactions between characters you would otherwise never see near each other. Kefka is an absolute delight anytime he is on screen. Shantotto is given a perfect voice that brings her saucy smartass knowitall character from FFXI to life. ExDeath is absolutely pure evil and man does he love the void. On top of them interacting and such, you get to play as all the villains which is even more fun. Every character has a cool unique moveset that controls the same, like in Smash. It is 1 on 1 as it should be for a large map 3D fighter. If it was 2D then you can go more like NT tried to, but in 3D it doesn't work. The areas are very diverse to fight in, they really picked a lot of cool FF locals. Another thing the PS4 game messed up, it was all just fields in PS4. Duodecim is basically the exact same game as the original with some new characters added in and a marginally different story to incorporate Lightning and like... Kain for 5 minutes. Can't really pick one or the other, they are both fantastic.

A huge part of my love for this game is that it was there for me during a really tough time in my life. When my kid was first diagnosed as autistic and we were doing like anything and everything to "fix" it (lol fix it, oh the stupid narrative they feed you about how you have to fix autism, but thats another discussion) Anyway, at the time we were told intensive therapy is the best way to 'fix' things, so I took my son to this 3 mornings a week at great expense to me, and while he was in there, i sat in the woods nearby playing Dissidia on a rock for 3 hours. For an entire year that was my morning 3 mornings a week, even dead of winter.
