Lmao this whole exchange

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/7/724cfb9b.jpg

Certainly! Both the GameFAQs Character Battle contests and the Best Game Ever contests have had their fair share of unexpected match outcomes over the years, often leading to intense debates and surprises among fans. Here are a few notable examples:

1. **GameFAQs Character Battle Contests**:
- In the 2014 Character Battle, Waluigi, a character from the Mario series known for his role as a supporting character and occasional antagonist, unexpectedly defeated popular characters such as Zelda and Tifa Lockhart in early rounds, surprising many fans with his success.
- In the same contest, the character "L-Block" from Tetris managed to reach the semi-finals, surpassing expectations and becoming a fan favorite due to a grassroots campaign to rally support for the seemingly insignificant block.

2. **GameFAQs Best Game Ever Contests**:
- In the 2002 Best. Game. Ever. contest, the underdog game *Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty* managed to defeat *The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time* in the finals, causing an upset among fans who expected the latter to win.
- Another unexpected outcome occurred in the 2014 Best. Game. Ever. contest, where the indie game *Undertale* reached the finals, surpassing many AAA titles and garnering widespread support from fans, ultimately losing to *The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time*.

These unexpected match outcomes often spark heated discussions and debates among the gaming community, showcasing the diversity of opinions and preferences among fans. They also highlight the unpredictability of popularity contests and the ability of lesser-known or niche titles to capture the hearts of voters.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/1/14d55bcb.jpg

Certainly! Here are some genuine examples of unexpected match outcomes from GameFAQs contests:

1. **GameFAQs Character Battle Contests**:
- In the 2013 Character Battle, Ness from *EarthBound* defeated popular characters such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Sephiroth to reach the finals, surprising many fans with his underdog victory.
- In the 2017 Character Battle, Sans from *Undertale* made it to the finals, defeating iconic characters like Mario and Link along the way, showcasing the unexpected popularity of the indie game.

2. **GameFAQs Best Game Ever Contests**:
- In the 2004 Best. Game. Ever. contest, *The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask* unexpectedly defeated *The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time* in the semi-finals, causing a stir among fans who expected the latter to win.
- In the 2007 Best. Game. Ever. contest, *Final Fantasy VII* was eliminated in the early rounds, surprising many fans who considered it one of the greatest RPGs of all time.

These examples demonstrate the unpredictable nature of popularity contests and how unexpected match outcomes can arise due to factors such as fan campaigns, niche game communities, and shifting trends in gaming culture.

I'm not going to be around tomorrow, so this is a 2-day special! I moved the schedule around so that this one would be contest-centric as I think it will give us all something to talk/reminisce about together for two days. Must feed Leon, Ulti and KP

Discussion Topic: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/80708068 (if you want to complain about this topic series do it here and not in the current topic)

Rules: If you list more than 4 things I'm gonna just tally the first 4 you say. If you list the same character multiple times it won't count. Be nice. Don't shove your personal definition of "Mount Rushmore" down others' throats. Have fun. If you're going to majorly change a vote please quote your old vote to make it easier for me.

Upset-specific-rules: Just being a seeding upset does not count as we know that the Contests were seeded like shit. These need to be matches that were not highly contested and there was an unexpected outcome where the "weaker" character or game upset the "stronger" one.

We are not looking for matches that had a 50/50 shot of going either way, these should be matches where nobody really debated much about them. Real David and Goliath shit. You can use stats or whatever to justify what is and is not an "upset" but I think we know the big ones by now.

YESTERDAY: I threw away a bunch of votes for Avengers Endgame because I hate Thanos. Just kidding! I love Thanos and Thanos culture.

This was one of the least competitive Rushmores we have ever had. There was a ton of discourse over Time Loop vs Time Travel movies which I think is funny because people were voting Groundhog Day without even thinking twice about it.

wanted to post this funny sticker I have on my old iPad:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/7/7d61dd61.jpg

my friend found a bunch of these really awful stickers in the back of the warehouse of the comic shop I used to work at. there were a ton of them like this, and while most of them did feature Pikachu in some capacity, the rest were all highlights of really odd Pokemon for a sticker pack, like this Graveler one that I fell in love with and took for myself

The entire pack was obviously made before it was set in stone what the "core" Pokemon for marketing would be, so you get Graveler with kissy faces instead of any stickers at all with Charizard. this is what I would consider a "golden age" of Pokemon

I think this era is reflected well in the KFC toys also. you got all 151 original Pokemon to choose from, but it's so early and untested in the US that they go with... Zubat, Vulpix, Seel, Dratini. Uhhhh yeah those four all had serious staying power. Just like getting toys at KFC

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/2/2bb176fe.jpg

I love early Pokemon days. Let Pikachu be fat again

Time Travel Movie-specific-rules:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/5/5b183827.jpg

Movie must feature time travel as a core component of the plot. Time travel cannot just be something that's a throwaway gag or a deus ex machina. The main character does not need to time travel themselves, there should just be a major character(s) time traveling in a way that impacts or drives the plot forward.

Really great showing by Dr. Evil. There's so much latent love for Austin Powers, I cannot believe Hollywood has not tried to resuscitate that franchise.

4th place was an absolute battle the entire time. Due to the variety of characters we had Dr. Evil, Joker, Terminator, Freddy and Hannibal, all tied with each other for 3rd or 4th constantly for most of the topic. Dr. Evil managed to pull away and Freddy looked like he'd have 4th, but he stopped getting support after page 2. Freddy's Dead.

Movie villain specific-rules: The villain should primarily be a movie villain that originated in a movie, so no Bowser or Voldemort.

However, if a villain's original form of media is largely forgotten/significantly dwarfed in popularity by the prevalence of the movie(s), then they count as a Movie Villain.

Additionally, if the character did not originate in a movie but it's one of those situations where the movie is significantly different than the source material, then you can say that the villain is a movie-exclusive interpretation and they will count. I'd say under these rules that Heath Ledger Joker would count (and characters in similar situations)

I reserve the right to say "NO THAT'S NOT A MOVIE CHARACTER >:(" but I probably won't unless someone posts something real dumb

do you guys think if the Washington Monument wasn't in a pre-existing tourist hotspot that people would still give a shit

say, for instance, it was built in Mount Vernon, where I don't think a lot of people go unless they are history diehards

would people flock to see a random obelisk still?

PS I would throw out Disney World because that's not one solid monument but a collection, you'd need to pick something in Disney World like the Walt statue or the castle

i think it's gotta be very "american," be recognizable worldwide as "american" and be something people would travel to america just to see

I think you could make an argument for Cinderella's castle even though that isn't inherently "american" in nature and you can find copies of it outside of America

realistically even when I'm being liberal with the rules you still mostly get the same options. Statue of Liberty, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Liberty Bell. Maybe Empire State Building and Golden Gate Bridge fly up the list with looser rules. White House definitely gets elevated there as well. Hollywood sign starts looking like a more solid pick.

You could argue McDonald's Arches but I would throw that out for not being a specific monument

You're also going to still have purists who won't deviate from the core monuments so it would be an uphill battle to start arguing for Yankee Stadium against the true greats

I think if a foreign person views it as a big American man made monument, regardless of intent it qualifies for this Rushmore

im keeping it pretty loose for this one to make it interesting so that Washington/Lincoln/statue of liberty/Mount Rushmore doesnt dominate (although I think it will regardless)

Monument specific-rules: Must be manmade monument that exists in America (or on American soil at the very least). Monument does not need to be built by Americans but needs to be in America. You can debate if the moon is American soil or not.

If it's big, American, famous, and a manmade monument to something American, it will probably count

You can also debate if this being a Mount Rushmore counts as representation of Mount Rushmore by default, therefore not warranting a vote for it.

YESTERDAY: Easily one of the best Rushmores I have ever had the pleasure of tallying. 10+ posts in a row of pure discourse MULTIPLE times

on top of that, we had the closest race for third/fourth ever in one of these with CT, DKC and Super Metroid in a three-way tie consistently for the ENTIRE TOPIC, ending in CT barely making third and DKC/Metroid in a tie

If the four people who had voted DKC2 had taken a second to skim through the topic to see that DKC was the chosen one to support, this tiebreaker would not have been necessary! (one person had both DKC and DKC2).

@linkhatesganon you were the last vote and the cause for a tiebreaker! Thank you as I will not have to think of a wacky poll idea for today
