about a year or so ago i replayed vesperia and controlled patty the entire time, she's monstrously good if you control her (probably the best in the game controlled barring maybe judith) and have the right skills set for instant/permanent critical mode, and a one trick support bot if you don't (shes still good but if you don't disable 95% of her abilities she's gonna act weird most of the time). super versatile when controlled; spamming her support spell to continuously stop time over and over is HILARIOUS

narratively she still kind of fits with aifread's relationship to alexei, which is one of the earlier hints that alexei is the biggest bad but i do see why some people don't like her inclusion if they've played the 360 version first... but my first was the ps3 version anyways

dyson sphere program is pretty great now, they've done quite a lot of QoL since it released. including blueprints and much easier mass placement of stuff in general. obviously it's nowhere near factorio's complexity and power, but 3d building is something pretty unique about it

and yeah the battle system is another thing I've heard people complain about but I never related,

the battle system kind of feels empty in meaningful choice until you unlock chain attacks; it felt like i couldn't really speed up kills by a meaningful amount trying different things because they never fed into any other mechanic. just kind of felt like you were passively waiting around pressing buttons when they became available

but afterwards it becomes a balancing act of leveraging orb building necessitating different burst paths, driver combos, and just having the right blade out at the right time without breaking either of the previous two. the entire system just became complete with chain attacks. plus you got a story blade around the same time which allows rex to do 3/4ths of the driver combo by himself

xc2 without chain attack is like a pizza without cheese

niche as in in the setting he is the player with the fastest reaction times, it's his main standout feature that noone except yuuki who dies right away can match

it's not particularly inventive from a storytelling standpoint, but it is something that he apparently does better than everyone else that wouldn't matter that much usually... but it's why he's given dual wielding, which grants him a noticeable edge due to others not having experience fighting it

Louis CK is one of the people I'd be fine with having a return to comedy. He understands what he did wrong, he's genuinely apologized without really blaming the victim or society, and he didn't cross a lot of the worse lines. The reason people even liked him was because of how borderline creepy he was, so it's not like we have a betrayal of personal personality vs their public personality.

Final Fantasy XI: Have other people doing similar projects bothered with this entry? I know XIV has really hit its stride and certainly we plan to include that, but this game never had the foothold or respect XIV has gained I feel. But... it's a numbered entry, and it feels wrong to deny it. How much of a commitment is this? Obviously MMOs are huge time sinks, but I'm more interested in experiencing the world and NPCs the game has to offer.

11's plotlines are absolutely fantastic and you'd be doing yourself a disservice by ignoring the game entirely. 11 might not be 14 level of renown, but 14 right now is literally eclipsing WoW. The game's doing really well for a ps2 era "dead" MMO; a few years back they did a final chapter and saying they're ending content updates, but the game's playerbase has just grown in size since then, mostly because they've made the game so incredibly accessible while still managing to keep it the same.

If you know where to look, levelling to 99 and unlocking the various plotlines should only take a few days. At the very least you need to do Chains of Promathia (I personally liked Wings of the Goddess more, but I have a minority opinion here). It gets even easier if you're somewhat social and find a linkshell (guild but more informal) that's helpful; there's a lot of old players that would love to help newbies experience FFXI.

at a low level, everythings very easy and tank is absolutely the most punishing

but at higher levels healer gets so stupidly complex based on your individual party's situation while tanks brr and dps brr but one fight in a tier they brr differently (in eden second tier, that was leviathan, that necessitated a different weird burst window because of boss invuln timing. but even if they didnt do this the raid was fine............)

my problem right now at this very moment is i'm on tethered phone internet and occasionally i'll lag for one single second and literally die in that timespan

i've taken a lot of safety nodes and my playstyle is incredibly kitey (doing deadeye TR atm) but its so 100 to 0 so fast

tier 5 maps and tier 1 maps are basically the same difficulty for me because i can kill just fine, but getting grazed or lagging is death

Tank is hard cause other jobs are generally clear in what they need to do. Healer just needs to keep everyone alive and DPS just needs to do as much DPS as possible.

in specifically XIV, this is not true in the least. tanks are dps with extremely simple rotations that at certain scripted points in the fight need to press mitigation buttons and occasionally run to a specific spot. there is zero flexibility in what they need to do or are expected to do. dps are harder because their rotations are more than just pressing 123, but healers are the hardest of all because you have to do as much damage as possible in addition to healing or your team isn't going to beat the enrage timer. it's gotten to the point where in XIV, a good healer is never actually seen casting a healing spell, because they've optimized their rotation to such an absurd degree they can rely entirely on cooldowns. healers have the largest margin to excel because of how they have to leverage the party living vs how much team damage they can contribute to; DPS have a big margin to excel by utilizing their class's movement and minimizing downtime. tanks have the least margin to excel because their entire kit is so incredibly straightforward

wow tanks used to be more interesting but they've taken away a lot of the big brain ability out of classes over the years and it just feels like a different dps. the part i hate the most is how they reduced how vital stagger is to brewmaster by simply nerfing stagger numbers and making them baseline have more passive armor

I dont think I ever consistently take the lead. I just make sure I take hits and my allies dont take hits. Most of the time Im usually second in line ready to spring up front whenever needed.

tanks in mobas usually have hard cc that lets them force advantageous fights; if you usually play reactively and you have significant cc, you're missing out on a lot of engagements that could result in a kill

obviously tanks differ based on their kits (an arthas is not going to start fights as often as an amumu, diablo, or tidehunter will), but in general they have better tools to start fights with than the rest of their allies due to either hard cc or the ability to dive. you have to proactively give the enemy a reason to target you or they will ignore you

i've only played a little bit of unite and i don't really like it because it feels like peeling for allies in that game is more fuck with the autotarget with your gigantic cheeks than actually provide utility or threat

Tanking in MMOs is almost always the easiest job (ESPECIALLY if we're talking XIV), it just requires the most proactive play and a bit more preliminary knowledge about the fight. Meanwhile moba tanking always seemed one of the more challenging roles because you both have to recognize when the best times to start or end fights are, but also recognize your allies' tendencies over the course of a short game so you can adapt and support better. In random matches, noone really tries to learn allies' playstyles because you'll never see them again, so there ends up being a lot of unspoken miscommunication of expectations.
