What obviously happened there is that there was a language barrier. The other leaders in attendance heard the comment, but misunderstood it. They thought a joke was being made. Additionally, many just joined in on the laughter ignorantly because they didn't want to offend Trump by missing a joke.

It shows his character. A grandfather also isnt some distant relative. There is no reason to not mention him attending the school. It is not that big of a deal compared to the other lies he has told but is still a lie none the less.
