I just kept laughing at how hilariously bad Detroit is made to look in this movie. I appreciate that they went way more over the top and ridiculous compared to the first - might as well. Also pretty sure there was a line specifically referencing Leon the Professional and one referencing Star Wars lol. Seems like they kinda had fun with it.

Oh nice! Yeah Stephen King has like a dozen adaptations that are 8/10 or better, and Carrie's right up there. You're right, Brian de Palma is a genius working under constraints. That long shot at the prom showing the fixed voting & bucket rig is so great: (2:38 to the end, and I think it actually extends longer than that)

I think Piper Laurie's character freaks me out more than anything else in that movie. It was also more heartbreaking than I expected once I finally watched the whole thing.

Night House

Definitely not as strong as The Ritual, which had the same director. The positives are atmosphere and premise, but it's a little heavy on cheap jump scares and the story kind of sputters out at the end - it felt like the script needed another revision to tie up the loose ends. Frustrating in that the pieces were there for it to be good or even great. Rebecca Hall does a very good job carrying it basically by herself, though - her character had some great gallows humor.

When Marnie Was There SPOILERS

Both times I've seen this I think it really caught me at the right time. First viewing was ~5 years ago, with the English dub - this time I watched it in its original Japanese, with English subtitles.

It really struck me upon first viewing how real the movie was in dealing with social anxiety and other complex, painful emotions in a child/young adolescent. I am very familiar with feeling alone despite being surrounded by people, and the movie captures that perfectly. It also does a great job fusing Anna's real-life family and grief into the 'fairy tale' arc - it's a pretty emotional moment when you realize who Marnie actually is.

An important movie for anyone Anna's age and up, I think most people harbor some negativity towards parents/grandparents, but it's important to understand their lives too.

45 YEARS SPOILERS

Not surprisingly this one came to me by way of Ari Aster lol. The way he talks about it, especially the ending, it really seems like a bit of a companion piece to Midsommar, at least from the relationship aspect.

It's a ghost story in a way, because right from the get go you have this sense that something is "haunting" this couple, and as it's slowly revealed why, I really think you can start to feel horrified for Kate. Minor plot contrivances aside, the fact that you can live with someone that long and still not really have an idea about that aspect of your partner's life is really something that has stuck with me. Should Kate have probed further on the subject early on? Would Geoff have even provided answers then?

It's a very "quiet" film as Ari puts it, but that's why the ending hits so hard. She's realized she was just settled for, and the "dream" life she had is gone forever. Any film that can really put you in someone's shoes like that is to me top-shelf art.

Seems like a lot of us got busy around the same time. I can rate Fargo now as a 9/10 and say it's one of the Coen Brothers' best movies, behind only No Country For Old Men imo. The whole cast is great, but William H Macy especially so, I think.

I still plan to watch Lost in Translation, and 45 years again before I rate/review it.
