Bros they're literally taking my Game of the Decade and giving it the makeover it deserves along with I'm assuming some QoL improvements.

This is the only footage of the game so far so there's not really much to say, but just watching it gives me a shiver down my spine I seriously cannot wait. I am HOTLY anticipating the next Nintendo Direct because I need more info on this game as soon as they can give it to me.

#2. Yakuza: Like a Dragon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7ABgVXnrbs

I don't care what they call it, I'm still calling this Yakuza 7 just like I refer to Judgment as Judge Eyes. This game is out in 2 weeks in Japan, but we still only have a vague "2020" for the english release.

Bros you know I love that Dragon Quest. Bros the new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga (who's name is already growing on me), is also a life long Dragon Quest fan. So much so in fact that when he fights he imagines it as a turn based RPG and thus that's what this entire game is.

As soon as I'm done with this list I'm actually going to try out the japanese demo, but I'm already assuming I'm going to love it. It's like they knew I loved Yakuza already and the developers asked themselves "what can we do to make SHINE love it even more?"

#3. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV: End of Saga

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuiNOLlWICw

I swear I've watched this game's OP almost every day for the past year. The thrilling conclusion to the Erebonia Arc this is the End Game to Cold Steel III's Infinity War. I already know LITERALLY EVERYONE IS HERE and the long saga of building up building up Gilliath Osbourne finally comes to a head (or at least I assume it does).

Since the next Trails game, Hajimari no Kiseki, seems to be filling in the same role as TitS the 3rd where it's tying up loose ends of characters who didn't have a ton of screen time while simultaneously setting up the next arc in the series I'm pretty sure Cold Steel IV is where it ends for the current plot line. Like i'm not sure because I try to avoid any hard details about the game, but it's literally in the title! END OF SAGA.

Hopefully it comes out in 2020, but if not hopefully they at least give us the PS4 ports of the Crossbell games or Ys IX instead.

#4. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G-G71KEhuU

Hey I only have to wait 2 more weeks for this one! Going back to when I first discovered emulation and played through Legend of the Super Saiyan on the Super Famicom all I've ever wanted was a Dragon Ball Z RPG that covers all 3 major sagas and they were never able to do it. We had the Legacy of Goku games on GBA (2nd one was pretty good!) but they all only covered one saga each. More recently we had Attack of the Saiyans on the DS developed by Monolith (of Xenoblade fame!) and that game I thought was awesome....but it covered literally only the the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai and the Saiyan saga. I hoped they would do more, but it never happened.

Fast forward to the beginning of 2019 they announce Project Z a DBZ Action RPG. At E3 it became Dragon Ball Z Kakarot and this is basically what I've always been asking for. Personally I think it looks very fun, the combat seems similar to the BT games but presented as JRPG with characters leveling up and seemingly accurate enough power levels . The boss battles themselves have an almost puzzle element to them where you have to figure out the weak points and dodge their beam patterns to find the opening. It's not quite open world, but it's closer to something like a Dragon Quest XI where you just have big open maps to explore.

Personally I'm excited and I feel the bar has been raised for DBZ games ever since FighterZ and if it turns out bad then oh well, but I'm playing it nonetheless.

#5. Resident Evil 3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNjGFUaorYc

I'm choosing to believe Capcom is going to take what worked so well in the RE2 Remake (Points up to my GotY 2019) and use that to turn RE3 into a game we can be proud of. Nemesis is already way better than Mr. X, but hopefully the game surrounding him is just as great.

#1. Xenoblade Chronicles

I'M REALLY FEELING IT! NOW IT'S REYN TIME! SHULK TAKE IT EASY! THIS IS THE MONADO'S POWER!

Bros it's the GotY 2010, GotY 2011 and GotY 2012. I had been following this game way back when it was called Monado: Beginning of the World. I eventually caved when it seemed like we weren't going to get it and modded my Wii to play the PAL version. Then Operation Rainfall happened and we got it again and I had to play it all over again! This is easily the best RPG I've played since the heyday of the SNES when we had games like Final Fantasy VI, Earthbound and Chrono Trigger. I would put this game right up there with them.

Sure it's not the prettiest thing to look at, but the characters/story/music/gameplay all hit in the right places for me. Shulk's quest for revenge leads him across the corpses of 2 giant titan gods one natural and one mechanical in a war between the Homs and the Machina. The music is up there as some of my favorite songs ever not just in a video game, but just in general and the gameplay is essentially Final Fantasy XII on steroids. They take the single player MMO combat and blow it out to give the player more control of what's going on and it has the whole break/topple/launch/smash system to try to get you to perform combos in that order to maximize damage.

Xenoblade X and Xenoblade 2 were also both very good, but didn't quite live up to the precedent the first game set (although I love that Xenoblade 2 earned its number by actually going back to first game and showing how they're connected and the true nature of that universe).

In the end the Zohar is the true winner here let us all pray to our Monolithic god.

TOP 15 FAVORITE GAMES OF THE DECADE

#2. Red Dead Redemption

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PD24MkbHQrc

Easily my favorite Rockstar Game; I think this is the one that truly hooked me on the open world genre. John Marston one of my favorite protagonists in a video game (he was also my part of RDR2 when you played as him again in the epilogue that connected the two games), but really the entire cast was wonderful. The Wild West was a setting with so much untapped potential and no one really got into as deep as Red Dead Redemption did. The main campaign itself was great enough (I ended up rewatching all the story cutscenes on youtube the minute I finished RDR2), but just going around the wild west being an outlaw and doing what you wanted was truly engrossing. Then it ended with one of the most shocking endings in video game history!

The game even managed to get me hooked on its multiplayer where you formed a gang and roamed the map participating in shootouts at forts and playing card games and the like. Since I had to move to Texas a few years after playing it, the culture that game presented I can see living down here and only serves to remind me of it time and time again and how much I enjoyed playing through it.

#3. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoyYtqi5u54

You know this year's presenter of GotY had to show up at some point! DQ is like the only series where I'm hit with nostalgia so hard that just hearing the main theme for the first time when a new game hits is enough to send tears to my eyeballs. I've been playing this series since the very first one back when I was 5 years old and I've never stopped. Dragon Quest XI being the 30th anniversary game leans into this hard by including aspects of practically every game that came before it (and if you're playing the 3DS or Switch versions also visiting the previous games in 16 bit format).

At the time Dragon Quest VIII was like the perfect RPG for me because at the time RPGs were beginning to move to more actiony systems (hey Kingdom Hearts) and all I wanted was something that had modern production values, but played like the NES RPGs I loved. DQVIII accomplished this for me and I couldn't help but feel disappointed when they regressed a bit with DQIX, then went MMO with DQX (Bring over DQX you cowards). Once again all I wanted was a single player JPRG that I could say was a true followup to DQVIII

Dragon Quest XI is that game. Yuji Horii knocked it out of the park and he's already confirmed he's working on the next mainline DQ. If they somehow reveal it between now and when I put up my most anticipated list I will edit it into that list right away

#4. Super Mario Odyssey

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhaxW1-mtuA

Jump, Man! Another close one between this and Galaxy 2. While Sunshine and Galaxy 1/2 kinda did their own spins on the 3D Mario formula, Odyssey felt like the true evolution the series has been needing since Mario 64. I can say the same thing about this game that I said about Breath of the Wild. Every dumb idea that popped into my head worked in this game. Nintendo once again thought of every possible solutions to the obstacles presented to you and made sure no matter what you tried it would work to some degree.

What set it apart from Breath of the Wild though was that every moment of the game I felt there was something to do with no downtime and I was having fun doing it the whole way through. Even when I didn't know if a moon would be in the area I was checking out or not, my experimentation and exploration was always rewarded. Mario can go anywhere and do anything, the only real limit is yourself.

Out of curiosity, how would you rank the Ys games? I've played Felghana and thought it was okay, Dana and loved it, and now I'm playing with Celceta, which is also okay but feels like a massive step back from what we got with Dana (so much so that it's hard to believe Dana is only four years newer).

8 and 7 are my favorites. Celceta isn't that great, but it's fine.

Before the switchover to the new gameplay style, Ys IV: Dawn of Ys was my favorite (which Celceta is sort of a remake of)

#5. Dark Souls

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So5hTxKmPrA

PRAISE THE SUN! I am Sunbros for life I will come into your game and help you with whatever you're trying to fight. If we're going for most influential game of the decade this would be #1. Souls-like became its own genre and now as of 2019 we're even getting AAA produced Star Wars games that are heavily influenced by Dark Souls.

I'm just glad someone had the balls to move away from handholding in video games and kicked your ass until you either overcame it or died trying. It rides against my need to explore every nook and cranny of the environement because there's always the fear if I go over there something's going to kill me, but I gotta see what's over there anyway. Like I said in my Sekiro comments they did seem to get easier over time (although I'm unsure if the games themselves were easier or I was just used to that formula over time), but I'm glad they brought it back with Sekiro.

#6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EvbqxBUG_c

Leave it to Nintendo to completely revolutionize the open world genre. This was the first game where I felt I could truly do anything my dumb brain would come up with and it would actually work in game. Nintendo seemingly thought of every possible outcome for every situation the game presents you. Pretty much played this game non-stop for 3 weeks straight getting all 120 shrines and at least 400-500 korok seeds. Then came back when they did their DLCs for that HORSE MOTORCYCLE.

One of my coworkers just got a switch 3 months ago and is playing BotW for the first time so I've been enjoying hearing their stories about how the game is going and how they're tackling various situations. With the sequel on the horizon my hope is that they add some proper dungeons because the Divine Beasts weren't it.

#7. Metal Gear Solid V

Was going back and forth here between Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes/Phantom Pain and in the end the latter is simply an evolved form of the former and the final evolution of the Metal Gear gameplay. Similar to Death Stranding I could spend endless hours just sneaking around this game's environment and just playing around with how enemies react to all the tools you have at your disposal. I also like that despite technically being an unfinished game that Kojima managed to tie the story to Metal Gear 1 before taking off into the sunset. If Kiefer Sutherland just talked as much in this game as Norman Reedus does in Death Stranding this could have been so much higher.

#8. The Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure (Ao no Kiseki)

#1 The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero/Trails to Azure (Released in Japan 2010 and 2011 respectively)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCFars0Xyxg

Really just two halves of the bigger story that is the Crossbell duology. After spending the first chunk of 2019 finishing my PS2 collection, I spent the majority of my spring and summer catching up on all the Trails games I hadn't played yet (and replaying some that I had already played) in preparation for Trails of Cold Steel III in the fall and obviously the Crossbell games were the biggest gap that I needed to fill. I had been following the Geofront translation for a year or two and when it became clear they weren't going to even finish up Zero before Cold Steel III was out I took it upon myself to acquire the Chinese PC versions of these games that had been patched with a fan translation and the voice acting from the Evolution versions of these games. Zero is pretty similar to Trails in the Sky FC where it's a lot of worldbuilding (specifically Crossbell and the tensions between Erebonia and Calvard), but also twice is long as TitS FC was. It also tied off some storylines that were still hanging around from the TitS trilogy. Azure was the big payoff though. This game is a thrill ride from beginning to end featuring a lot of old and new characters and accompanied by an engaging plot you come to expect from the Trails series. Whenever I make my MCU comparisons if Trails of Cold Steel III is the Infinity War of the series, then Azure is the Civil War. By the end I think I would consider it my favorite game in the series and definitely one of the best JRPGs of all time. Now of course just a few weeks ago they finally announced PS4 ports of both of these games, so if they ever bring them over I'll gladly play them both again for trophies and I implore you all do the same.

I'll just add that I've never wanted to have a daughter more than I did playing this game and wanting to protect KeA forever. And as much as I like Rean Schwarzer in Cold Steel, it's Lloyd Bannings who's the real GOAT.

#9 PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67m6e2gedd8

I doubt I'll ever be able replicate what happened with PUBG. Obviously I talked about what happened with me and the battle royale genre back in my Apex entry. It just came at the perfect time and place. I gathered a ton of old high school friends together and we started our own discord server just to play this game. The beauty of the battle royale is the downtime where you're collecting weapons and ammo and armor and haven't really run into any other teams yet. At that point it's basically a glorified chat room where I can joke with my friends and also strategize for what's to come

Then it all hits like a brick and at the end of it either you and your friends have survived and you move on to the next encounter or you're all dead and you try it again.

I've learned this genre isn't for everyone, but it's certainly for me

EDIT: Also only ever play this game on PC. The controls on the console versions are a broken mess.
