Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.
It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which finds a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.
There is an opinion that parties in free countries are useful checks upon the administration of the government and serve to keep alive the spirit of liberty. This within certain limits is probably true; and in governments of a monarchical cast, patriotism may look with indulgence, if not with favor, upon the spirit of party. But in those of the popular character, in governments purely elective, it is a spirit not to be encouraged. From their natural tendency, it is certain there will always be enough of that spirit for every salutary purpose. And there being constant danger of excess, the effort ought to be by force of public opinion, to mitigate and assuage it. A fire not to be quenched, it demands a uniform vigilance to prevent its bursting into a flame, lest, instead of warming, it should consume.

Ideally, I'd be for them, but honestly I feel like if you gave senators like... 2 terms, a Senator in their second term has absolutely no built in impetus to act with any sense of honor or anything. At least in regards to an impeachment trial or whatever because what do they stand to lose? They've won their allotted terms, so why should they care if they blatantly and obviously give a giant middle finger to the country?

Acting with honor is actively discouraged currently, so that isn't something I'd be worried about.

I guess you could argue the opposite in the case of partisan politics, it can free them to do as they see fit in their second term and give a middle finger to the party.

This could possibly happen occasionally. They wouldn't have to worry about getting primaried, so deviating from the party's expectations wouldn't be as big of a deal.

I don't get how he agrees with the charges, but voted Not Guilty on a technicality.

He personally thinks Trump should have been found guilty. However, his interpretation of his job requires him to find any possible excuse, no matter how weak it is, to protect Republicans.

You are failing to prove that. You need to establish what would happen if he had say a random person with no legal training defending him first and then you can attribute anything beyond that to his lawyers. Current belief is that said random person would result in Trump getting off.

No it doesnt. If the senate was an impartial jury, then getting him off would indicate they did a good job, but they arent. Most of the senators made up their minds before this started and the lawyers could be literal clowns and do just as well.
