During the pandemic I worked at a liquor store and was told by a customer that they took checks. Perhaps they did before the pandemic, but that at the time, my manager reiterated that we were not taking checks.

My current job will take checks, but it's very rare that they're received from one-off clientele. When we gets, it's usually either from donors or traveling groups with balances. From a non-management source I was told that we shouldn't take checks outside of those issues, although one time someone did because our system was down and we couldn't take card.
