Already knew Japanese. Got a job doing the same thing I already did in the US (research professor). Work culture thing is just outdated internet stereotypes.

My wife (Chinese) works as a software engineer. She works a standard 9-5 just like me. We rarely do overtime. There are bad companies that give insane workloads and overtime, but most people aren't working for those. You get so many vacation days here. 10 paid vacation days required by law (and you have to take them), but a lot of places give more. We also have the most public holidays in the world. Life here is great even though we live in a very rural area. It's safe, people are friendly, good government support (we qualify for all the benefits native people do, even though we are foreigners).

Oh that's fire. I'm sure rural Japan is really beautiful. Good choice on your end.
