"Umm the National Guard is kinda the wimpy Army group those guys don't get shot at much". He was in the Guard for 24 years. Cadet Dumpy chickened out, and not even in a conscientious objector way. He felt to privileged to be in the Army. Walz re-enlisted after 9/11.
