Officially, votes will be tallied over weeks and months, but that's not what we're looking for here. As soon as the time passes that a person can't get in line to vote anymore, states begin releasing what they've counted so far, and media outlets can report it. Analysts look at demographic patterns in what is and isn't counted yet and make predictions about what that final number will be.
