To be fair, what they wanted was for the Dems to change course on unconditional support for Israel, not for Trump to win. The only threat that normal people can actually wield politically is to withhold their votes, so that was kinda all they could do to protest. It's dishonest to say that they wanted Trump to win.

Now, the obvious result of withholding votes was always gonna be that Dems would lose support vs the GOP. The activists were ultimately trying to play chicken with a party that lacked eyes, especially in a country with an enforced 2 party system. They've effectively chosen the greater of 2 evils, but I understand the view that both parties are beyond the pale on Palestine. It's just that it was far from the only issue to be voted on.
