The idiotic part is how many morons have been trying to claim Yasuke wasn't even a samurai. The reality is he was, but he was a very insignificant historical figure and largely a curious footnote who was forgotten after Nobunaga's death.

There are some....really, really weird pushes on Japanese history, like the claim there was a Black Shogun

these games take years to develop (Shadows since 2020, apparently), and Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla had been reviewing and selling well.

I feel like they started planning/developing right at the beginning of the culture war BS, where they likely felt using Yasuke would be seen as cool, where him being lead would help differentiate the game from other feudal/medieval Japanese titles, and it ended up being a case of poor timing.
