They're pushing for a wage that would put a minimum wage earner above the median family income of part of NYC. The median individual income there is actually about $15/hour. Meanwhile I live in a rather nice 200k or so town in Illinois where median income is higher than that, and living on $15 an hour isn't the high life but neither is it poverty wages.
