Getting shot doesn't make people fall in love with you again, at most you'd get some sympathy. Getting shot during a traffic stop, also not heroic. Perhaps if the person getting stopped had kidnapped someone, then yes. Blaming it on untreated mental health issues... that really says something about the force as a whole where they can have this kind of lunacy, untreated, running around with a gun.
