There's a high concentration of angst. Teenagers can be shit asses, but there's a ton of social pressure on them sometimes (both inside and outside of school) and unfortunately it creates time bombs.

Sometimes they self implode (commit suicide) sometimes they lash out at others (bullying) and in some cases they just want to cause as much damage as possible (killing those around them) because they're numb to the world.

At least that's my theory.
