Massively fucking up while taking care of something isn't "mostly taking care of them". No one would say letting a child starve to death is "mostly taking care of them" even though you gave them water, shelter and warmth. You're literally saying "taking absolutely no care of an animal" = "taking decent care of an animal". Reducing an animals lifespan by literally decades isn't "taking decent care of an animal".
