aren't they talking about chromosomal disorders or something? some people have extra chromies.

It's one such group that can have them, yes. Intersex conditions exist and are quite common.

But not all intersex conditions result from extra chromosomes. A number of conditions that result in painful and erratic menses are associated with intersex conditions.
