which is the inexplicable need to accompany repetitive sound effects - generally voice clips in anything even remotely modern - with player actions that will be performed approximately several thousand times over the course of an hour's worth of gameplay.

I feel you bring up a good point and am glad Lord of the Rings Online has a filter options that lets you block certain audio sounds. I play a minstrel and certain attack with our instrument became a nuisance to keep hearing. That being said, I feel majority of the time the repetitive sound effects are usually subtle enough that I wouldn't notice it and/or something else in the gameplay at the time of the sound effects grabs my attention instead.
