I've bought crap cars my whole life and I spend thousands fixing them. Not to mention the stress of them breaking down. I get not going too expensive, but having a good car matters. One of my vehicles was $600 about 4 years ago. Other than maintenance, I put very little into it. I redid the bushings in the suspension and a few other non-maintenance things, though. I put on well over 100k KM in this vehicle (my work vehicle) and it is sitting at around 350k KM. Nothing wrong with cheap vehicles if you can work on them yourself.
