I already said I supported the guy but I agree with this too. I will say that assisted suicide should be legalized for the fact that the end result would be no different than a dying terminal patient in possession of a signed DNR form. Our primary goal as a medical provider is to do what we can to make the patient pain-free and that should also include prepping for their death on their own rational terms, which I think is more ethical than just prohibiting it altogether imo.
Why can't people decide what they want done to THEMSELVES? If they want ti have someone help them die to prevent pain(and they are going to die anyway), who are you to stop them?
For the ethical reason that not everyone is sane and suicidal individuals tend to pose risks to anyone else around them, not just themselves. Some dude bleeding out from slit wrists may have been rescued one night and then 6 months later, he may feel glad he's alive. Another person may be experiencing delirium or severe psychosis and wants to rid out the demons from his/her body for good. Then there are the "suicide by cop" individuals too. Mental health is very complicated and probably the one thing that's in the way of an assisted suicide law since the healthcare community doesn't give a flying fuck about that ie. "just throw some pills at 'em, and we're good".
Unless you mean mentally competent terminal patients and elderly people with deteriorating health conditions, which they do anyway just not in the presence of doctors or caretakers.
