The original will help tremendously in getting accustomed to the universe and mythos, but watch it in the condensed movie trilogy version; trust me, it's better. And it's still long. But it sets you up for Zeta nicely.
Wiki's being unclear about which movies constitute the "condensed trilogy." Does it start with Char's Counterattack?
Oh no. Char's Counterattack is set after the original, Zeta and ZZ. Definitely don't watch that!

I should warn you, the first film is pretty plodding. The animation behind those movies is also kind of... uhh, Scooby Doo-riffic. We're talking about something originally from 1979 here so try to bear that in mind.
The third movie, though, is all kinds of awesome.
