111. Food Wars (AKA Shokugeki no Soma)

No one nominated one of the anime I'd say qualify for worst of all time, but Food Wars comes pretty close! I despise quite a few things about this series, but the main thing that makes it terrible is Soma himself. He's basically a huge asshole who doesn't have any particularly good reason to be way more talented than the rest of the cast, but he is anyway, and the show basically goes out of its way to try and make it seem like he's the good guy and that you should always be cheering for him. It even makes him so perfect that he doesn't lose a single cooking battle (at least not in the first season), and this predictability makes the series even worse. Everything feels inevitable, and not in a good way. The series doesn't have much to offer if you don't like him, since most of the other characters fawn over him in their own way - even the villains are all obsessed with him. Quite a few shounen try to have something of an ensemble cast, where the show will sometimes go multiple episodes without the main character even appearing. Not so for Soma. The side characters get barely any screentime compared to him. Even when it's an episode focusing on someone else, Soma's there the whole time. Erina seemed like she might be okay at first, but on the tsundere spectrum she's way too dere. Would've been better if she just outright hated Soma completely.

Even if the show was more well-rounded, I'm not sure how great it would be. The cooking battles aren't particularly exciting, and the overreactions to everything have been done better in other shows (Yakitate Japan, for example, which probably heavily inspired Food Wars, had much funnier reactions to the food than this, and did the comedy much better in general). The drama isn't that great either. I'm not even really sure what the show's appeal is supposed to be. It's not that funny and the drama's not that good, which leaves fanservice I guess? Tame fanservice series like this don't appeal to me in general, so for me at least, Food Wars basically had nothing to offer.
