No its not a Canadian phenomenon, pretty damn universal.

But which items you use which brand names to define IS at least somewhat regional.

Like how, in the US, people in the South will refer to all soda (and screw you, it's not pop) as "Coke", even when it isn't Coca-Cola.

I think by this point Kleenex and Band-Aid has become pretty universal, but "Kraft Dinner" is definitely a thing localized in some parts of Canada. And I'd hazard a guess that there's at least a few other regional terms from other places in the same vein.
