The Contortionist is definitely a metal band - prog metal, to be exact. Clairvoyant is by far their least heavy album, though, and it leans towards the "post-rock" end of the spectrum as much as anything. The album is more than the sum of its parts if you ask me, but since you're not a full album person I don't know that you'd actually get a whole lot more out of it.

Cool to see a mention for Streets of Philadelphia. That's such an underrated Springsteen offering. And as far as Thunder Road goes, I've come to appreciate it in large part because it's one of two or three songs I can think of that really capture the whole rock 'n' roll "spirit." The Born to Run album kind of has that feel to me overall, actually. I'm kind of surprised you don't hear it on the radio at all, because it seems to come on all the time for me.
