Before you say Mario... first off, he can't leap over tall buildings in a single bound! Of course, neither can Superman 'cuz flight physics... but The HULK could in that Hulk game, plus I think you can go jump crazy in Infamous or whatever that game was called.

Dragoons probably jump high, but they jump off screen so maybe they're just lazy?

My pick would be the dragoon. There's probably an anime or comicbook character that can outdo it, but for videogame primary character I can't think of one.

A quick google search founds this from reddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/7t7ydk/the_horrifying_power_of_dragoon_jumps/

"The dragoon moves at an average of 249.408km/h over a distance of 51.96 meters (including both ascent and descent) with an (estimated) acceleration rate of 1154.7m/s2, landing with a force of 121,240 newtons - just under half of a car crashs force."

So roughly an 85ft high jump if the guy's math is right.

Also the FFT lancer's movement ability is called Ignore height. The game's limited by its art style but they could theoretically just casually leap onto any surface whether its two feet or twenty thousand feet in the air.

Alex mercer comes to mind for me too.

Then of course, there is Donkey Kong, Who is able to jump so high he breaks orbit, and goes past the moon, so he can punch the moon down to earth.

Except in FFXIV where they're know for tanking the floor.

Also, I should point out that the topic never explicitly says playable character, so I'm sticking with my guess so far of Raphael the Raven.

Pretty sure that's falling more than the upward motion of jumping. Even if you get the position right to fall upward you're still falling.

By that I will admit that every jumper in video games who can escape the planet's gravity and retained their velocity afterward is a candidate for highest jumper.

Well, the only game I know of where that can be done as a gameplay element is... Zenith, oh and possibly Getting Over It with Bennet Foddy if that counts

It's all in good fun, just like how I've been comparing the tank jobs to types of rock music or groups. For instance I see Paladin as ranging between U2 (circa "War," "Achtung Baby," or "Joshua Tree"), Warrior as your classic thrash metal through the 80s and early 90s, and Dark Knight as goth or symphonic metal.

I'm not sure how I'd compare Gunbreaker yet, though I suspect it may be something less than enjoyable like Nickelback or Creed, but I do know I love to top off this comparison by saying Dragoons are literally Spinal Tap.

No, you see, Spinal Tap explicitly parodied metal bands of the 70s and 80s. Dragoons try to tank with their heavy armor and heavier-hitting rotations (when done right, sans aggro mitigation).
