Pokemon Destiny Deoxys
"I'm only okay because of my friends."
Score: 6.5/10

After an opening that describes what pokemon are that, if you don't already know, would explain absolutely nothing, so if you were like a parent who was dragged to this movie and you were depending on this opening to explain what the hell is going on, you were just so screwed. I find this particularly weird, because an adequate explanation is really easy. "A pokemon is a monster that you can store in a little ball, and some people, including our protagonist Ash and his friends, are trainers, who train said monsters to compete against each other." Bam. Adequate explanation in 34 words, you're done.

We begin the movie proper with the narrator implying that there are other planets full of pokemon out there, and we cut to space. Where in space? You know. Space. It's not that big, you the place I'm talking about. We see a MYSTERIoooUUUSSSssssSS meteor heading somewhere equally mysterious... but almost certainly Earth, because they're unlikely to make a movie about Deoxys and Zorblonian pokemon trainers on the planet Garflex.

Cut back to Earth's North Pole, where a group of scientists are studying hundreds of Spheals, Sealeos, and Walreins. They're led by Professor Lund and Yuko, his improbably attractive assistant (I sometimes wonder if writers and directors know what actual scientists look like). Lund's child, Tory, is also there, playing with the Spheal. Because every scientist takes his small child to the North Pole and allows him to interact with the subject of study, thereby poisoning all research gained.

An aurora brightens up the sky, and the meteor from earlier passes through it. Rayquaza watches it go through the atmosphere and follows it. Like real meteors, it doesn't mostly burn up as it passes through the atmosphere but instead just hits the Earth head on and at its original size.

The impact scares the Spheal, which causes a stampede that Tory is caught in. Lund rescues him, but he's nearly killed before his father gets there. They watch Deoxys crawl out of the meteorite and pick up a glowing green crystal. Before more can happen, Rayquaza appears out of the sky and attacks Deoxys. I like how Yuko seems mildly intrigued by Rayquaza's appearance. Sorry, but previous episodes and movies established legendaries as legendary, as in, there was a very real chance of them not being real. Rayquaza just showing up like this should be like King Arthur just showing up at a Subway and ordering a six inch meatball sub, but here Rayquaza is treated as if its existence was an absolute fact, and only its appearance is worthy of note.

In any case, during the fight we learn that Deoxys sees through electrical patterns, and even trivial amounts of electricity blind it. Rayquaza defeats Deoxys and leaves, which causes it to turn into a blue crystal and fall into the ocean. It drops the green crystal near the scientists, who take it and leave.
external image
Professor Lund thinks that Rayquaza attacked Deoxys because it was another pokemon in its territory. Oh really. Oh. Freaking. Really. I'm sorry, but no. Rayquaza's territory is "the atmosphere," and granted, Deoxys did pass through it, but it was there for like four seconds before reaching Earth, that can't possibly bother it. Unless Rayquaza's territory is "Earth," I have a real problem here with your explanation, and your explanation is the only one we're going to get in this movie.

Cut to four years later. The scientists have spent the previous four years trying to mess with the green crystal because they're movie scientists, and they're now shooting lasers into it because why the hell not? Why the hell not. This causes the crystal to glow, and all the way back in the North Pole, the other Deoxys revives and starts heading toward the scientists.

Cut to the heroes, who arrive in "LaRousse City, the headquarters for anything and everything high tech!", except Porygon because you know. I have to admit, LaRousse City's design is a nice change from the previous movies. The first movie takes place in a creepy castle on an island, the second movie in a rural group of islands, the third movie in a creepy mansion, the fourth movie in a forest, the fifth movie in faux Venice, and the sixth movie in another forest, so a city of extremely high technology is a good move. I checked, and apparently its architecture was based on Vancouver? Yes, because when Japan, the most technologically advanced country in the world, wants to portray technology advanced even by their standards, they think of "Canada."

Ash has come here for the town's battle tower, which he's very excited for even though he's never mentioned it before in the show.
external image
By the way, Team Rocket won't do anything this entire movie. Rather than be powered by fusion power plants or something, this super advanced city runs on wind power. A robot takes their picture and gives them passports to be used for shopping, because that's totally what passports are used for. And passports? Is LaRousse City in another country? Maybe this really is the Pokemon World's version of Canada. In any case, LaRousse City is full of all of the technology you can think of that seems kind of cool but is actually impractical, like moving sidewalks and escalators everywhere. The heroes meet a group of trainers who are also here for the Battle Tower: Rafe and his Blaziken, Sid and his Blastoise, and Rebecca and her Metagross. Each of these side characters will be important exactly once in the plot, which is more than May, Max, and Brock get, so in a way, they're main characters.

In the Battle Tower, Ash meets Tory, who is really freaked out by Pikachu, but the two of them accidentally get entered in the Battle Tower tag team together against Rafe and Sid. Ash sends out Pikachu to battle Blastoise and Blaziken (probably the best choice he could have made, I admit), but Tory reveals that he owns no pokemon, so Ash loans him Torkoal, whose voice sounds nothing at all like Torkoal's normal voice (I checked, Torkoal was replaced for this movie for "unknown reasons"). Tory is incredibly awful and costs them the match, and afterward, Yuko explains that Tory is afraid of pokemon because of his experience with the Spheal. Uh... then why would he be hanging out in the Battle Tower? I mean, if you want to avoid pokemon, that's already going to be pretty difficult, that would be like avoiding cars in the real world, but how do you plan to avoid pokemon in a place people come for the specific purpose of bringing their biggest, strongest, and scariest pokemon along with them?

Tory leaves and runs into a wild Plusle and Minun in trouble, so he helps them out, but runs away the moment they try to thank him. Tory then goes to a greenhouse and talks to a CGI effect.
external image
Somehow, Tory doesn't think this is weird at all, and he's not concealing it or anything, he just doesn't have any other friends to introduce to the CGI effect. Really, that's it. Tory, who by most respects seems normal if fearful and shy, talks to a CGI effect and thinks it's completely normal.

Cut to Deoxys, who reaches LaRousse City by flying. It summons another aurora, but the aurora disappears quickly.

Ash tries be friendly with Tory, but Tory wants none of it. Ash tries to make friends the only way he knows how.
external image
Ash does eventually succeed in befriending Tory, but Tory still doesn't like pokemon. The heroes seem disappointed that they failed to cure a deeply nestled phobia in an hour of work.

Cut back to Deoxys. As you recall, electricity blinds it, and this is a city of high technology. Thus, it compensates by using its psychic powers to blast whatever is in the way of what it's looking at. At night, it summons another aurora, and everyone in the city thinks it's beautiful. Only one person, Rebecca (the girl with a Metagross) realizes that it's impossible for an aurora to appear here because, hey, LaRousse City isn't in the North Pole! After she explains why it's impossible, everyone else is like "Well, I guess we're just lucky." I'm sorry, but this is the equivalent of snow in Los Angeles, and this is a city full of scientists, and only one person thinks this is strange? Only one person bothers to record data on the aurora using her laptop?

We then get a really boring montage of all of the heroes' pokemon playing. Tory shows up and plays with them, but avoids actually touching them.
external image
While they play, Rebecca tries to analyze the aurora on her laptop, because she is literally the only person in the city who thinks this is worthy of research. Deoxys eventually disperses the aurora, but this causes Rayquaza to notice its reappearance and come to LaRousse City... for some reason. Seriously, Rayquaza's motives in this movie are incomprehensible.

In the morning, Tory takes all of the heroes, as well as the minor characters like Rafe, to the greenhouse in his dad's laboratory. He shows them the CGI effect, and the excited non main characters introduced their pokemon to it.

Just then, Rayquaza reaches the city, and the city's advanced aerial defense grid picks it up. Why didn't it pick up Deoxys earlier? Because shut up.
external image
Officer Jenny has her underlings contact Professor Lund, and this actually does make some sense because Lund is one of the only people in the world to have actually seen Rayquaza. What doesn't make sense is that Lund wonders why Rayquaza has left the ozone layer again, somehow not putting together the mysterious auroras from yesterday because, yes. Yes, we have yet another stupid professor. Where are these people getting their doctorates? I don't think you can get a doctorate from a community college, can you? They do figure it out eventually, but only because Deoxys flies by a camera.

Lund orders Officer Jenny to evacuate the entire city because Rayquaza and Deoxys are going to throw it down. Yes, Lund has the authority to order around the police force. I know he's an important scientist in a city that respects technology, and that he's the closest thing to a Rayquaza expert the world has, but still, Jenny takes the order and issues an evacuation warning in less than fifteen seconds. After the most orderly evacuation in history,
external image
The city is essentially empty except for everyone in the laboratory, including Tory and the others. Lund orders all of the scientists to evacuate and runs to find Tory in the greenhouse, but gets cut off by a crowd and is forced to leave the city with everyone else, ultimately meeting up with Officer Jenny on a boat.

Deoxys creates a bunch of copies of itself and uses them to carry innocent people who are actually trying to leave away, but just then, Rayquaza shows up. Deoxys creates a force field around the city, cutting Rayquaza (and Lund and Jenny) out of it. This means that everyone in the city has either been caught by Deoxys or was in the laboratory. Rayquaza will spend the next half hour headbutting the force field.
external image
When the force field goes up, the wind power goes down (because no wind can reach the city), making the electrical grid useless. Because the city's electrical grid is down, all of its advanced technology fails, including the doors. Yes, someone thought it would be a good idea to connect every single door in the city to the same electrical grid because **** it, it's way cheaper and how likely is a blackout anyway? As they leave the greenhouse, the Deoxys clones attack, and while they go down to one attack each, they're too numerous to fight, and manage to steal Sid and his Blastoise. Instead of leaving the greenhouse normally, Tory decides to lead everyone out of the underground exit, so why they tried to pry open the main doors to begin with I have no idea. Also: the greenhouse underground exit is the only door in the entire city that isn't an electric sliding door. I'm serious, it's the only one and there's no explanation as to why.
external image

The heroes meet up with Yuko, who takes them to the laboratory and explains that the city's electrical grid is down. She's using a backup generator for the laboratory, but anything else won't function, including pokeballs. Yes, apparently pokeballs rely on the city's electrical grid because **** if I know how they work in forests, which are not well known for their electrical grids. This means they have only the pokemon they had already let out: Surskit, Masquerain, Metagross, Blaziken, and Pikachu. Yuko explains that Deoxys crashed to the Earth four years ago, and Lund named it Deoxys. Why Deoxys? Because shut up. She thinks Deoxys has been regenerating since, and is now powerful enough to return to the city. The heroes are afraid Deoxys has found them,
external image
But it turns out to be the wild Plusle and Minun from earlier, which do their best to pal around with Tory, who doesn't really like them because he's still not huge on the pokemon thing.

Unfortunately, they still have no food or water. They have a choice: sit for a few days until it becomes an actual issue, or run outside like idiots to search for food right now. They of course choose the latter. Ash, Brock, Tory, Pikachu, Plusle, and Minun go to look for food while Rafe, Blaziken, Rebecca, and Metagross go to look for the kidnapped people. Because it makes perfect sense to send your two most powerful pokemon to look for the kidnapped people and your weakest ones to look for food. Sadly, the Deoxys clones manage to steal Minun and a vending machine Pikachu had shocked to work without the electrical grid. The bastards! I wanted one of those-- hot dogs? They sell hot dogs in vending machines? Ewwww.

Rafe and Rebecca find the building where they're taking kidnapped people to, but can't actually do anything about it. Fortunately, Ash and Brock do succeed in finding actual food and water, and everyone returns to the laboratory.

In the morning, the Deoxys clones find the heroes, so Yuko takes them to the underground laboratory. Why didn't she take them there before? Because don't shut up. No, I want you to ask questions and wonder about things, because the more people say "I don't care about the details," the more plot holes writers will put into their movies for convenience's sake. Don't shut up, question everything, look to everything you see with a critical eye. In any case, she takes them to the deepest part of the laboratory: the room where they store the crystal they found. The crystal glows, and the CGI effect leaves it and comes to Tory, and everyone realizes that Tory's friend is Deoxys using its psychic powers to communicate with him. Rebecca figures everything out now: the auroras are how Deoxys communicate. She took videos of the previous auroras because she is literally the only person in this movie who isn't stupid, and translates the auroras. How does she do that with a few minutes of video of the auroras? Shut up is how.

She realizes, through the translations, that Deoxys is just searching for its friend in the crystal, and is stealing people away because they're interfering with its search. It sees through electrical fields, but people, pokemon, and electrical devices give off such fields and restrict its vision.

Everyone now wants to regenerate the Deoxys in the crystal using lasers (instead of just giving Deoxys the crystal), but Yuko explains that they need way more electricity than they have right now. There's only one logical course of action: go to the wind generators and manually spin them enough to generate electricity for the laser. Instead they decide to free the kidnapped people from earlier because derp.

They free the kidnapped people in a surprisingly easy moment, but Rafe has to fight Deoxys for a few moments. A lucky shot by Blaziken disrupts Deoxys' concentration, allowing Rayquaza to punch through the force field and enter the city and attack Deoxys.

Brock and the other characters go to the wind generators to spin them manually while Ash and Tory go back to the laboratory to help Yuko activate the laser (because she definitely needs their help for that). When they succeed, the crystal explodes, and out comes a Deoxys. It takes Ash and Tory (but not Yuko) to find its friend.

Cut to outside, and Deoxys is winning the fight. The second Deoxys saves Rayquaza and tells the first Deoxys (through the medium of auroras) to stop being a dick. Sadly, Rayquaza doesn't get the message and is happy to just attack both of them. When the force field is completely destroyed by Rayquaza's attacks, the wind generators start up again. This is a bad thing: the city's security robots activate and view everything as a threat because... well, just because. The Deoxys save Rayquaza's life when the security forces try to kill it, but the effort immobilizes all three of them. Yes, pokemon that can morph to adapt to any situation, and a sky dragon that lives in the atmosphere, are only able to make a draw with Canadian security robots.

Professor Lund and Officer Jenny come back to the city (instead of, you know, alerting the military) and realize they can't regain control of the security robots unless someone goes to the chief robot (in the center of a wave of the security robots) and presents his passport to it, which will confuse it for long enough for Jenny to take control of the system. Why will it confuse the robot? Because shut up. I especially love how Lund makes an impassioned speech to his son about how proud he is and how much he trusts Tory, and Tory and Ash instead send Ash to the robot because he's more athletic.

Ash makes it to the security robot, but drops his passport into the wave of security robots, so Tory throws Ash his passport. He drops that one too, so Pikachu sacrifices itself to bat the passport back to Ash with its tail by throwing itself into the security robot horde (don't worry, it survives). Ash takes as long as possible to present the passport, but eventually does so, allowing Jenny to take control of the system and deactivate the security robots. As thanks for saving its life, Rayquaza now accepts the Deoxys and flies away without further difficulty. The Deoxys leave as well, going to... wherever the hell they're going to, it's kind of unclear, but since they have each other, it's fine. Tory accepts the Plusle and Minun, and it's implied they'll now become his pokemon. Ash tells Pikachu that he's glad he'll always have it, even though an earlier episode had an old looking Pikachu that was only about ten years old, so Ash, sorry buddy, but you won't be twenty-five before you're digging a grave under the bushes in your mom's backyard.

This is a reasonably strong movie that still has a lot of problems.
- Rayquaza's motives make absolutely no sense, and this is important because Rayquaza is one of the main forces in the movie. A single line about Rayquaza considering itself the guardian of the world against anything from space would have sufficed, but instead Lund says that it's Rayquaza thinking the Deoxys are muscling in on its territory? As I said earlier, its territory is the atmosphere, and Rayquaza hated the Deoxys so much that it chased after them four years after their only interaction. That's not something you do when your territory is momentarily violated, that's something else entirely. We never get a proper explanation for Rayquaza's actions.
- The movie's main theme is friendship, and I admit Plusle and Minun were good choices for Tory's pokemon because they're some of the only pokemon that are "together," if you know what I mean. Sadly, Ash's friends, you know, the other three main characters, do nothing at all the entire movie. This is a problem. And the truth is that the power of friendship kind of does nothing except save Rayquaza. Granted, that's a major deal, but that's the only thing it does. When the security robot horde appears, it's Ash who stops it, not by friendship but by athleticism. When the Deoxys clones attack the heroes, they don't stop them by hugging them, they stop them by electrifying or burning them. It's possible to write a plot where friendship is a major theme in both the metaphorical and literal sense, and this isn't such a plot.
- When the very first aurora appeared as the meteorite hit the ground the work of the Deoxys? How could they create an aurora when they were in the meteorite? Also, why are they the only pokemon in the universe to communicate without sound? Clefairy are also from space and still do the whole "saying my name" bit. And was Rayquaza in that aurora because it knew something was about to happen, or did it just happen be nearby?
- Does each movie really need a Character of the Day? Only the first and sixth movie dispensed with that. No one can really get invested with Tory because Tory has never appeared before and will never appear again.

With all of that said, this movie has way fewer plot holes than the previous movies, so it scores some major points there. The score speaks for itself: it's pretty okay. My only real complaint other than the ones above is that the climax goes on for way too long; I didn't give a proper feeling in the write-up of precisely how long the security robot scene goes on for.

Fear Canada.

I know Canada actually has a pretty impressive military, but it has the misfortune of being next to America and thus being directly compared to it. The fact of the matter is that America spends more on its military than the next twenty-nine countries combined (US: 687,105,000,000, Next Twenty-Nine Countries Combined: 682,430,000,000). Even China only spends about one-sixth of what the US spends.

Well, technically North Korea probably ranks somewhere in the top thirty countries, but it doesn't report its spendings so it's impossible to tell. That would inflate the number below America to above it, but still.

Do you wanna carry around a Snorlax egg?

Though if we're basing it all on size, Onix would've been the first one to get a baby.

You still can carry around Snorlax eggs if you don't use the incense. That was such a stupid idea, not just retconning it so all pokemon with new baby forms just hatch as them.

It's all Charmander's fault that Onix is weaker than it should be. Hell, Steelix would probably have more Attack and ****.

Nope, but it did know bide which doubles the damage it received to the opponent.

Onix wasn't hard with Charmander, its Sp Def was low enough that ember would hurt it despite being resistant to fire.

Lights, Camerupt, Action!
"It's a spaceship, but it sinks?"
"Yes."

Score: 3.5/10

The heroes decide to go to Lilycove City to catch a ferry to the next gym. Hey, remember how one day ago you stopped a battle between Rayquaza and Deoxys? No? Okay. They come across a guy, Elijah, next to a river. His Camerupt is stuck, so the heroes decide to help push it through.
external image
You might ask why Elijah doesn't just put it back in its pokeball and then wade the river himself, but I have an explanation for you: Panda Express. Panda Express did it.

Camerupt is carrying a movie projector, and Elijah explains that he travels from town to town to show people movies. You see, a lot of towns are so small that they can't afford a theater, but people in them still like movies, and even though he doesn't get paid to do it, Elijah feels obligated to help these people experience film. There are so many things wrong with this idea that I could come with like twenty-to-thirty points. I'm going to list three.
- I have a hard time believing that there are any small towns in the modern world that have no ability to construct a movie theater. I know there are actually some people in Africa who do what Elijah does, but that's because a lot of African countries are so poor that my computer speakers are worth more than what villagers earn in a week.
- These towns are located between Fortree City and Lilycove City, two major cities. Any two large cities will have traffic move between them, and small towns in the area will benefit from this. There are even some small towns, like Baker (located between LA and Las Vegas), that do nothing but leverage this fact by constructing easily seen fast food restaurants from the freeway to attract as much money as possible. There's no way a town between two major cities would be so poor that it couldn't afford a movie theater.
- Elijah later mentions that the towns still have postal services. Wouldn't it be better for everyone to just have a single projector at each of their town halls and be mailed the movies? A movie projector is only a few hundred dollars, and a film reel is like twenty dollars or something.

The current movie Elijah has with him? "Plusle and Minun and the Princess Rescue." You would think taking multiple movies with him wouldn't be difficult, but whatever. Not only does he take the projector with him and travel, he reads the dialogue as well. You see, he brings silent movies that require a living narrator to read the script. Hell, man, I could write up twenty-to-thirty things wrong with that except that I already made this joke.

The heroes decide to go with Elijah. After a boring traveling montage that I couldn't think of any good jokes for, they make camp for the night, and the heroes have flashbacks to the last time they saw movies.

They reach the town,

And Team Rocket steals the projector. That's it. That's literally it. Team Rocket's evil plan is to steal a projector for silent movies. I'm serious. The tailoring for their custom uniforms probably cost more than the a silent movie projector is worth, and their plan is to steal the projector.

Well, Ashpikachuthunderboltblastingoffaaaaaaggggaaaaiiin.

It's a pretty funny coincidence that yesterday's episode was also based around Poke-movies. I haven't seen it, but it's got Cilan playing a pirate, so it's probably way better.

The episode actually scored a point just because of the movies the heroes have a flashback to. One stars Red (the actual Red, not Ash, from RBY), one is a generic western except with Snorlax and Machoke while the sexy barmaid Azumarill watches, and one is Space Titanic (that quote I put on the picture wasn't out of context, that really was the joke, except with "NATU XATU"). Still, they couldn't hold the episode up on their own.

Eh, Camerupt's already had an episode. I did like how Camerupt was a major part of the first half of the episode, but once they reach the village it's completely forgotten about.

Which one? The one with Meowth's backstory? The one where they film the one that's used in Meowth's backstory?

And yeah, in that movie, Clefairy, Teddiursa, and Ursaring all spoke, while Pikachu only said its name. I have no idea what was up with that.

Crazy as a Lunatone
"Take that back! You're much weirder than we are!"
"Afraid not! When you look up 'weird,' your picture's in the dictionary!"
"If you're weird enough to be seen as weird by weirdos like us, you're weird!"

Score: 3/10

A meteorite crashes to the Earth, and almost immediately, the Pokemon Mystery Club (the Skully and Mulder pastiche from way long ago) show up. They blow up the meteorite, and out comes a Lunatone. They attack it, but it gets the better of them and erases their recent memory before leaving to go to a nearby village.

Cut to the next afternoon. The heroes arrive in the town, but no one is around. They eventually locate the Nurse Joy, who has red eyes and speaks like "HELLO. WHAT. IS. IT. YOU. WANT?" and of course the heroes think this is completely normal. Only Brock suspects something is amiss, and only because this Nurse Joy doesn't conform the parameters all Nurse Joys do, which he keeps track of in his Nurse Joy book.
external image
I would love to see an Officer Jenny's opinion of his Officer Jenny book. "You keep tabs on my entire family? Freaking weirdo." Brock is certain that something is wrong, but everyone decides to ignore it because dinner is much more important. They run into the Pokemon Mystery Club people, who mention the meteorite and leave. The heroes then speculate on whether extraterrestrial pokemon are possible even though they recently met not one but two Deoxys that were explicitly from space.

The mention of a space pokemon is enough to make them investigate Nurse Joy's strange behavior further, so they return to the pokemon center. Team Rocket also breaks into the center for unrelated reasons, and all of them run into Lunatone. It uses hypnosis on Jessie to communicate with everyone and tell them leave even though in past episodes, hypnosis did not work that way. Team Rocket attacks it and it falls to the ground. Meowth translates that it needs moonlight to be alright, and after Team Rocket attacks again, Ash blasts them off and decides to take it outside.

Nurse Joy reveals a problem: the town they're in is surrounded by high mountains, so you can't see the moon. It's a full moon tonight, so this is the best opportunity to help Lunatone. There's only one place in town, a hill, that's high enough to see the moon on. Really. Okay.

They dress a cart full of sheets and stuff over the Lunatone, and when the PMC confronts them, they claim to be going to a moon party, so the PMC lets them through. No, really. This happens. They reach the hill without trouble, but the PMC attacks the heroes in a tank, and defeat Pikachu and Mudkip before Beautifly stops them. Well that's improbable.

The full moon rises, and the PMC attacks again, but the reinvigorated Lunatone defeats them easily and the episode ends as pointlessly as it began.
