I have a decent sized tv and I've never had a problem with other systems but I feel like I have to squint and be on top of it to read most things.

It's not the system. Microsoft just requires gamemakers to put their games in a minimum of 720p.

UGHHHH, my HDTV broke while I was in the middle of that game and had to use a standard TV. The text was absolutely horrendous.

yeah pretty much. Thats like the main reason I got my HDTV. I got sick and tired of tiny text.

Mine was only 300 bucks and its a Sony Bravia, so I got a pretty damn good deal.

Yeah I was playing HD games on an SDTV for a few years... it wasn't usually that unbearable. I couldn't play Prototype, the text was too small. MGS4 with the large icons was great though, and AC2 was fine, even if you couldn't really read the map.

Pretty much this. I'm just not a big graphics guy. I'm entirely fine with a game being playable and a movie being watchable. I mean, this text sucks, but I can manage. I just dumped $300 on a 360, I don't have another $300 to dump on a tv.

They're better looking, but it's honestly not worth it that much to me. Buying a new HDTV isn't cheap. If I had infinite money I would buy a new TV sure, but I upgraded my computer and my laptop first. More important.

Also, HDTVs create problems with music games, which further deters me.

The difference is there yes and I can see it. But since the difference doesn't blow my mind (A.k.a SDTV are just fine) I consider it to be negligible.

But that might just be because I almost never use my TV, and when I do use it it's to play games that appear just fine on a SDTV (Ps2, Wii, other older gen consoles). I rarely play on my 360 and PS3 which are nowadays just used to watch videoclips and listen to music.

It's not just a Microsoft/360 thing. All games are basically being made with HDTV in mind, now. Not counting Wii, obviously.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't call the difference in image quality negligible. It's a big difference. I just don't really care that much anyway, image quality stops being a high priority for me after a certain point.

At least tell me you have a 16:9 TV.

If you have a 4:3 TV you may as well just stop playing new games altogether.

the visual quality difference is substantial, but offset by the cost and added visual lag that comes with buying an HDTV. still have a 4:3 SDTV and it's doing pretty well!

HDTVs almost across the board add a couple frames of visual lag, adding a delay between in game action and when it appears on the screen. That's what Paratroopa was talking about when he mentioned rhythm games, and it's a problem for a few other genres as well (or any game, if you're sensitive enough that it bothers you). SDTVs don't have that problem.

I've never noticed this myself. Probably because I've actively refused to play games on an SDTV for over 2 years now because of how awful it looks!

Back when I had an SDTV Dead Rising was the only game that was unreadable.

And an HDTV really is worth it. And you can get a good sized one for like 250 bucks. Not exactly breaking the bank.

I hate to sound like a dick about it, but if you're playing a modern game on an SDTV, I wouldn't even consider that a legitimate gaming experience. You may as well be playing on a broken tv that's missing 20% of the screen.

Hell yeah.

When I first got my PS3, I had a 4:3 SDTV, and was playing Metal Gear Solid 4 on that, then when I took it to my dad's, I played it on his 32 inch HDTV (and that one was only 1080i) and oh my god the beauty of the game was just, holy crap, I couldn't go back to playing the game on my crappy SDTV after that. Luckily my dad gave me that TV not too long after, so I got to play my games in High Def. Then about a year later, I got this awesome 47 inch LED TV, which I'm looking at right now. It's so freakin' pretty. I love it.

Although it had cost me 1400 dollars with my walmart discount at the time. Completely worth it.

Oh one other thing worth mentioning, old games usually look noticeably worse on HDTVs. I definitely prefer having my SNES and Genesis hooked up to my CRT, I've seen them hooked up to my friend's HDTV and it wasn't so good!

Understandable. If your TV is from the 90s, it's probably a good idea to go with something else that can give you good image quality - unless your PC is also from the 90s in which case abandon all hope!

My friend has a 20 inch HDTV and I have to laugh at him for it. When it's that scrunched up it hardly even looks better.

For TVs that are like 25 inches or better though yeah HDTV is a very nice, especially for games

anyway if you have a modern computer your monitor probably has an HDMI port? so just hook up a PS3 or 360 through that I suspect.
