Characters and story for me

gameplay is okay, but it's definitely not what makes the franchise so popular

Characters, Story, Gameplay, Boss Battles.

It's a but cutscene-heavy, but the gameplay is outstanding and the story will keep you very interested.

Everything. The characters are fantastic, the bosses are fantastic, the story gets confusing and convoluted at points (mainly in MGS2) but it's still really good if you pay attention, and I personally love the gameplay as well, in every game.

You won't be disappointed. PLAY IT.

I'd say try starting with the PS Metal Gear Solid. Gameplay is outdated, but it's playable as long as you don't play the sequels first.

And MGS > Twin Snakes.

Lies.

I like MGS because I enjoy its plot in a Michael Bay sort of way, and Twin Snakes is definitely the way to go when enjoying the plot like that.

Anyone who uses the term "true fan" is automatically wrong no matter what the argument is. Unless the argument is "why using the term true fan is bad" or something.Twin Snakes has the most amazingly over the top cutscenes of all time, and the gameplay is mostly better. The only problem is that sometimes the better gameplay sorta breaks the game.

It's just an example of amazing game design

It's got a bunch of cutscenes so that when you first play the game, it's like an epic movie that gets you really involved and invested in the stories and characters.

But you also get really excellent arcade-style gameplay that is very replayable and open to creativity, which is great on subsequent playthroughs when skipping cutscenes.

It doesn't let the fact that it's a game detract from its cinematic potential, and it doesn't let all the cinematics detract from the gameplay. Both aspects of the game kind of let each other do their own thing... but somehow they meld together perfectly as well.

The gameplay isn't better, I found no way to put your gun down without firing a shot, because the stupid Gamecube controller sucks. And the over the top cutscenes bring the whole thing down. I'm pretty sure they were meant to be a joke, because Snake isn't actually supposed to be able to surf on a freakin' missile.

The only problem with Twin Snakes is that the MGS2 controls make it to easy, yeah

The "over-the-top" cutscene argument is pretty much the dumbest thing ever considering MGS2/3/4 cutscenes

Twin Snakes is a remake from MGS1 using MGS2'S engine, plus reworked cutscenes. The plot is still exactly the same, it's just that it's over the top as hell. Now, mind you, I love the over the top cutscenes. There are people who don't, but...eh. You should definitely play it.

There's so much replay value. MGS3 has the most replay value though, that game just gets better the more you go through it.

As for how long it'll take, each game can be completed in just a few hours, but with cutscenes and not knowing what you're doing, I can see each game taking around 7-10 hours or so.

I played Metal Gear Solid 2 a few times through, and ACTUAL gameplay was 2 hours. Cutscenes make up about 10-15 hours more. 4 has the same problem it seems. 1&3 seem to at least let you control characters for a while. For all the flak Xenosaga gets for being an "interactive movie," at least you can play for more than 5 minutes at a time. If you can get past the "interactive movie" aspect, the other elements are solid.

I wasn't lying about Sons of Liberty. Sure, I'd had played through a couple times before, but the fact that any playthrough allowed me to beat the game (without cutscenes) in an hour and 58 minutes was an eye opener. NES games can get away with that (due to insane difficulty and lack of processing power), but a PS2 game pulling that **** is ridiculous.
