Jesus Christ.

Btw the biggest one is 1.7 billion miles in diameter (3.063 billion km)
The sun is 1.392 million kilometers in diameter.

So yeah, doesn't feel so big now.

Yeah I've known that for a while. This is the kind of thing that made me realize how insignificant I am, and really the human race as a whole.

It's not so much that it's a small star, it's rather normal. But the biggest ones are quite big.

yeah, the scale of things is pretty huge. however, the void between stars is enough to make even the largest star feel like a dust spec....

when you realize the astronomical scale of the universe, the concept of things like aliens visiting becomes almost a joke, though the concept of aliens existing approaches yes.

Approaches? It's just yes. There's no way we're the only intelligent species in the whole freakin' universe. When you realize just how big it is.

lacking a detailed examination of every particle in the universe, a claim that there is without doubt other lifeforms in the universe can only be labeled as wishful thinking.

what i WAS saying though, was that the likelyhood of such an event approaches near certainty. a 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999% chance might as well be 100%. it is just a simple application of the mathematical concept of limits.

ah, I should've actually looked lol

Why is significance measured by physical size?

it's a useful ego check because people are arrogant and tend to think the universe is entirely about us, the reality is that this entire planet could disappear tomorrow and on the larger scale of things, nothing will have changed.

along the same lines but even more powerful is taking a good look at the history of life on this planet. the apocalypse is a big topic now because of 2012 coming up, people tend to refer to it as "the end of the world" when again, the reality is that a planetary scale disaster could wipe us out and life will continue just fine. there have been mass extinctions in the past, and there will be more in the future
