Fanpatch the **** out of it. Get whatever the highest version of the Plus patch is now, the 'official' patches stopped doing anything useful like two patches in

Character depends on what you want to play. But don't play a Malk for your first time (they end up spoiling the plot for themselves through fourth wall breaking craziness)

You probably don't want to play a Nosferatu your first time out either. Having to travel everywhere via sewer can be frustrating when you don't know where anything is in the first place.

I didn't end up playing yesterday, but I'm going to start soon. Any other suggestions? I'm looking into playing either the social or the magical clan, or maybe the leadership clan, but I don't know how that ultimately works out. Like is magic not good in this game? Or what?

And should I buy fists, melee, guns? Or what? Are social skills important?

Social skills affect your dialogue options. Although I think you don't really need Seduction unless you want to be able to get free blood from women at clubs (or to get Jeanette to sleep with you, which is kind of amusing, but pointless)

I thought something like this would happen, and had a skull implanted in my forehead!

Ended up choosing the magic vampire caste and specializing in melee and dodge. Are lockpicking, dominate, and stealth very important to put points in?

Lockpicking is important, yes. Dominate eventually gets you the highly broken Suicide skill, if you level it enough (lets you make humans kill themselves, with no risk to the Masquerade). Stealth is helpful in some sections, if you want to duck around and not be seen rather than fight things
