Much crisper visuals. Cloud City especially improved from this IMHO.

Also, at least it still had Old Man Anakin

Uhh no, the new CGI scenes are way too out of place with the original effects.

Like the bar scene where the band starts playing.

Yeah, basically this. The CGI is out of date now anyway, so it just looks even worse. Even though the old special effects aren't as advanced, it's easier to ignore it because they match the rest of the film. But the CGI just clashes with everything else, taking you out of the movie.

I grew up with the special edition, more or less. I've only seen the original original trilogy once in my life, when I was young. And since you can't get them in anything better than VHS quality, I probably won't be watching them again.

Special Edition is overall fantastic, except for Han not shooting first and now Hayden Christensen.

I don't particularly care for the special edition, seeing as I watched the original tapes like 20 times each as a lad.
I still watch them to this day, actually, whenever I get Star Wars fever.

Spoilers for the eight people in the world who haven't seen Star Wars

I really don't mind Greedo shooting first, to be honest. I would prefer it the other way, of course, but there's a legitimate excuse: Star Wars predates the PG-13 rating, and keeping it in would bump it from PG to PG-13, so okay, I can accept that Han Solo impossibly dodges a pointblank shot. I'll just pretend Greedo is the worst shot in the galaxy, fine.

But Hayden Christianson replacing Sebastian Shaw is a problem for me. Other than that, I don't really care about the differences, except maybe inserting Jar Jar into the ending screaming "We-sa free!"

The CG in the Special Edition is nuanced enough that it doesn't pervade. Whether or not this is because it was still a very new thing back then so Lucas couldn't shove ten times more into the poor movies is debatable.

Actually, it isn't. I'm sure that's the case.

Either way, it's quite fine in the doses we receive with those movies.

Well, they kinda backed themselves into a corner with the Jabba scene in A New Hope because of Han walking around behind him. It was basically keep the fat guy in, somehow make it look like Han is stepping on his tail, or just leave the scene out.

I don't mind the addition of the Gungan scene in VI. The Gungans are a part of the canon, and they didn't feel terribly out of place in the conclusion, so I can deal with them being in the movie. I'm also not bothered by the added CGI, though I don't think it especially improves the movies either.

Greedo shooting first (which, in addition to not making sense, looks like total crap) and Han stepping on Jabba's tail (which also looks like total crap) are the changes that bother me. And Shaw being replaced by Christensen if we're talking about the later Special Edition.

Edit: I don't even remember the new band in VI >_> Gotta watch that movie again, I guess.

Christensen Anakin is Evil Anakin. Given that Vader turned good before he died, it makes no sense for him to appear that way as a ghost.

No, it's a bad change. The entire point of Luke confronting Vader and the Emperor is to prove that Vader and Anakin are the same person, it's to prove Obi-Wan's assertion that Anakin ceased to exist when he became Vader wrong. He constantly tells Vader that he's Anakin and that he believes he's still good. Luke could have easily not turned himself in to Vader at Endor, but he does so because he believes that his father is still good. If he believed that Vader was evil, he would have just stayed with Han and helped him set up the charges on Endor.

By changing Shaw to Christiansen, you imply that pre-Vader Anakin is the real Anakin and post-Vader (Shaw) is someone else. By having Shaw play Vader in the ending, you reinforce Vader being Anakin all along. Also: if Vader becomes a young ghost, shouldn't Obi-Wan become a young ghost too, unless Vader and Anakin are, as Obi-Wan claims, two different people?

Finally, as if Luke is going to look over there and know who the hell Hayden Christiansen is. He saw a bald, pasty, dying Vader for two minutes, he's not going to recognize a twenty year-old healthy Anakin.

It's also not fair that Anakin gets to retain a younger form while Obi-Wan is stuck as an old guy forever.

Overall, I agree that some of the CGI is unnecessary, and I especially don't like how CGI is so much more prevalent in movies nowadays. I get that it's easier, and when done correctly, it looks great. A lot of the time though, it's just too much, looks wrong/fake, and takes you out of the experience. I like it better when directors try to do things the old ways, using more props and models and such to get their shots and make it look more real.

That said, most of the CGI scenes added in the special edition aren't bad, the majority of them are just little things here and there, like more shots of the Millennium Falcon flying through Cloud City and such, Cloud City itself is vastly improved with the open windows, allowing you to see more. Other things like an X-Wing blowing up a TIE Fighter and flying through the explosion. Just those sort of things that I really enjoy.

The band scene isn't terrible, it at least doesn't bother me too much, but I understand the complaint. I do agree that Jabba being in ANH is trash.

Yeah I actually was going to make the argument that I'd think ghosts/spirits/whatever are manifestations of people in their youth, but that argument wouldn't make sense unless Obi-Wan changed too. Though, it's obvious that Luke could sense that he was Anikan like how Vader sensed Obi-Wan on the Death Star... right... right?

Yeah, if that's the only source I'm not too inclined to buy it. Tons of bad info on there since the site started becoming more popular.

And for some reason I tend to have a knack for remembering the idiosyncrasies of rating systems, so it seems like something I'd actually remember if I heard it before.
