Well, 3D action games for certain. God of War II, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Jak, Devil May Cry 1 and 3, God Hand, Hulk: Ultimate Destruction... Too many to list, really.
nah, it's this gen, but the PS2 did have plenty. still wouldn't really count Sly Cooper or Jak for action games as they're primarily platformers (while R&C is definitely more of a shooter AND it has two PS3 games too), and you forgot Ninja Gaiden. though with that said, NG can be gotten on PS3 and 360, Bayonetta exists, and all 3 systems have their bigger games in the genre. also on Hulk - Prototype is pretty much its spiritual sequel.
when you throw in the fact that DS and PSP both are also this gen, it's no contest. Castlevanias on the DS, Ys on the PSP being the two best series for each.

Well OK. DMC4 is around the level of DMC3, and Bayonetta eclipses them both. God of War 3 and Castlevania: LoS are just as good as GoW2, and as for Hulk both Prototype and inFAMOUS top it. Even Dynasty Warriors has had their best entry in this gen.

You beat yourself up with your past. Don't blame yourself, blame the world. Blame God. Blame me.
I was listing only PS2 games, but I did forget Ninja Gaiden. Oh, and Resident Evil 4, of course. GBA had pretty good Castlevanias as well, but the DS entries are probably better. I'm not totally firm on this stance, anyway.

Prototype is literally "you play as the Hulk, only with about half a dozen new powers too and for some reason he knows parkour." but his basic stuff is running fast, jumping high, running on walls, and stomping. then there's gliding, hammer things, whips, and more but yeah. it's pretty fun and has the best 10 minutes any action game has ever had in the beginning. then the game really starts and it remains good, but tries to mix it up with a sandbox style that really does not work. still, it's the same devs. not mentioned so far would be the Wii entries - NMH1&2 and Mad World being the standouts there. but fact is you can get any system and have your action games is really good and awesome. for individual consoles though, i'd probably agree that PS2's the best system for an action game junkie, but for generations, this one.

DS Castlevanias are better, yes. also helps that OoE is by far the most action-oriented Castlevania to date except for maybe Lord of Shadows (never played). and if we're gonna hit the questionable territory with TPS, then you can also add in Splinter Cell: Convictions and Gears of War. still isn't including the XBLA or PSN games though, as that'd add quite a bit too.

From: GANON1025 | #005 God of War 3 and Castlevania: LoS are just as good as GoW2
Welp
But hey, there's some good stuff. The main year in question is 2005 though; God of War, Devil May Cry 3, Resident Evil 4, AND Ninja Gaiden Black; it was gaming heaven for me, hundreds of hours split between those games, save to say a lot of my taste in gaming formed during that year.

It will launch for $350 with some Wii Sports s***. I bet my life on it. Damn, that KoolAid guy is awesome - NGamer64

kevwaffles posted... From: The Real Truth | #012 Beyond Good and Evil Are you just mentioning this in general. because if BG&E counts as action, I don't think I grasp the genre.
Why wouldn't it count? It's an action adventure game. People are mentioning Castlevania. And The Bouncer, is still fairly enjoyable.

How is Ace Combat a flight simulator? That's like calling Burnout a racing simulator. The emphasis (for AC) is on story and combat. They are action/flight games.

Castlevania varies, but the DS incarnations are different than the rest of the recent series. well, not DoS - that one remains in the same Metroidvania, but PoR definitely was a pretty clean split between the platforming and the action you had with the whole portrait dungeons. OoE then turns around on the series and ditches Metroidvania, goes back to level picking, reduces platforming by a ton (sometimes even having areas with none), and gives you extremely smooth, quick, and somewhat-to-very challenging action-packed gameplay. by all means, OoE is an action game first.
which isn't the case for stuff like Sands of Time. that's more of a puzzle platformer than anything else. all the PS2 ones are, though the series progressively does become more like one with it especially being noted on the modern ones. but for that the division's clear - Assassin's Creed took over that field and has been running with the ball since. Batman: AA's another.

it's not like this gen's over regarding AC - there's AC6 on the 360, AC7's coming in October and PS360'd, there was X on PSP (which is surprisingly better than 4), and though not necessarily an Ace Combat game it was done by the same team: Sky Crawlers for the Wii. by the time the year's over, this gen probably has the better pool as well, including a portable gem of the series.
(now the other PSP one, less talked about the better.)
