They can refuse to answer any question, whether under oath or not. This would just mean that the whole "who cares if I blatantly lie to the populace, it's legal for me to do so" attitude would be gone.

And yeah, Congress' ability to lie is vitally important for your country's interests. It shouldn't be abused or used outside of highly sensitive matters, but it needs to exist for those times.

I think it's mainly that nobody wants to willingly be seen agreeing with you on this kind of stuff anymore, so most don't get involved when they agree with you.
If you want to ever have any serious discussions about subjects like this then you probably need to make an alt and not tell anyone about it.
