You have a newborn child. Due to the mystical powers of the Infinite Improbability Drive and your deluxe voodoo crystal ball, you know three things to be true:

1) Your child is predisposed towards the exact same tastes in video games as you. Your decisions of what games they can play are the ONLY environmental factors capable of changing these tastes and opinions. Otherwise, they love what you love, and they hate what you hate.

2) You will somehow be their ONLY source of video games for their entire life (presumably, you will eventually have to divvy out these duties as you eventually become old / out of touch / dead, but assume for the sake of argument that you have infinite control here).

3) All "dead" online multiplayer communities have been resurrected! If there's a game you want your child to play, but it relies on playing online with others (like most MMORPG's), they WILL get the opportunity to experience the game at its peak of popularity.

This is your chance not only to relive your childhood vicariously through your offspring, but to fine-tune it perfectly so that he or she experiences only the games you give them, and only when you allow it. In other words, if you could play God and craft your life playing the ideal games at the ideal times, in order to produce the best overall appreciation (or skill) possible, what would that timeline look like, and what games would cease to exist?

You have the opportunity to let your kid(s) grow up in the 8-bit era, graduate to 16-bit, and work their way up to modern-day stories and graphics so that they can appreciate things the way you do. Or you could throw them right into child-friendly Wii games and either give them access to oldschool RPG's only when they're ready, or even just straight up pretend the 80's and 90's never existed. You can weed out the crap, or even force them to play games like E.T. and Superman 64 as punishment. You could even bring them up on one game alone, forcing them to train their entire lives to be the WORLD'S GREATEST at Street Fighter, Starcraft, etc.

*** (1) What would you want their VERY FIRST video game to be (1B: how old is your kid going to be when they play a video game for the first time)?
*** (2) Are there any games that YOU personally were never able to get into (because you were late to the party, etc), but would like to expose to your kids early so they can give it a proper chance?
*** (3) Are there any games (especially very popular games) you would rather your kids NEVER play, for whatever reason? (Assuming they have the same tastes as you, you could hide games that are only going to be a huge disappointment to them; or you could stop them from getting too addicted to WoW, Minecraft or Civilization by preventing them from ever playing those games in the first place).
*** (4) What is YOUR favorite video game, and under what precise circumstances would you like to introduce this game to your kid? i.e., how old will they be, what games will they need to have played beforehand, and if this is a game with any degree of player/story customization, what choices would you encourage them to make (i.e., play a Thief in Morrowind, or date Yuffie in FF7)?
*** (5) Describe anything else you'd do with your kid's life of gaming. (Make them play all the Final Fantasies in order? Give them official remakes or fan-made patches of games to play instead of what was first commercially available? Hold off on giving them any of the games you know they'd get hopelessly addicted to until after highschool / college? Torture them with nothing but awful games for years because you're a sick, sadistic bastard?)

*** (1) What would you want their VERY FIRST video game to be (1B: how old is your kid going to be when they play a video game for the first time)?

The Legend of Zelda (Virtual Console version even though there are literally no differences it saves me the effort of tracking down an NES) (1B: No younger than five years old)

*** (2) Are there any games that YOU personally were never able to get into (because you were late to the party, etc), but would like to expose to your kids early so they can give it a proper chance?

The PS1. Never owned one, missed out on pretty much everything on it.

Assuming the same tastes as me? Nothing really that I don't already dislike <_<

Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. See below for how I'd introduce it.

*** (5) Describe anything else you'd do with your kid's life of gaming. (Make them play all the Final Fantasies in order? Give them official remakes or fan-made patches of games to play instead of what was first commercially available? Make them play through (And 100% clear) the main Zelda series in release order (LoZ -> AoL -> LttP -> LA -> OoT -> MM -> Oracles -> Wind Waker -> Twilight Princess, and if I forgot anything well that game can shove it). After that, lay out the following for him:
Super Mario All-Stars + World
Final Fantasy
Civilization IV
Portal
Touhou 06: Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil

And tell him to pick one. And then move from there. Also, make sure that he doesn't use guides or anything like that to get help. If he needs help, I'll help him or he'll figure it out himself.

*** (1) What would you want their VERY FIRST video game to be (1B: how old is your kid going to be when they play a video game for the first time)?

Sonic the Hedgehog. The first one in the Genesis trilogy so they can move up toward the increasingly-awesome sequels from that era. Besides, it's the first game I played. And I played it when I was four so let's go with that for them too.

*** (2) Are there any games that YOU personally were never able to get into (because you were late to the party, etc), but would like to expose to your kids early so they can give it a proper chance?

Nah, I don't do much multiplayer gaming and most single-player games have plenty of avenues to get tracked-down through.

Just about any MMO. If they're magically going to have the same taste as me I can just flat-out explain to them that they're a dramatic time-waster and neither I nor them are going to enjoy them one bit anyway.

Xenogears. They'll be about thirteen and I'll have made sure they've already played games like FFVI and especially FFVII -- JRPGs with compelling enough plots that came out right before Xenogears -- so that they're familiar with the idea that a game can tell quite the story and also familiar with the general layout of a JRPG.

Honestly, there's not a whole lot of gameplay customization in that regard for this one. I'd jut make sure they get the absolute most out of the game without going totally overboard on leveling and such if that's not their cup of tea.

I guess I'd ask them to play the various series in order to experience the evolution. Otherwise nothing really springs to mind -- probably because I'm not interested in having children.

I honestly can't answer all my questions just yet. But things that I can think of are that I'd like my kid to experience Sonic -> Sonic 2 -> Sonic 3 & Knuckles at an early-ish age... I'd like them to get into the arcade fighting game scene early (and for them to actually be able to experience arcade gaming at its prime, or at least to get into the tournament scene)... and I'd REALLY want them to own an SNES. One day my dad asked me which was better, Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo. He asked this RIGHT after I watched my friend play one of the Sonic games for the first time, so I enthusiastically said Genesis. At the same time, my friend's brother was saying that SNES was better, but of course my dad bought me the system I told him I wanted, and while I had some great times on that machine, I always wondered what if.

Other than that, I'd really like my kid's first experience with a Final Fantasy game to be FF1 but without all the glitches. I don't want it to be one of the graphical remakes, I don't want the Black Belt class to be renamed, and I definitely want the spells-per-day system, not the MP system........ I just want Thieves to be playable, for example, and for certain spells not to be useless.

What are some cool arcade or 8-bit era games that have "surprise" stories, i.e., you come into the game thinking there isn't a story but it throws one at you? The best example for what I mean is how in Metroid, there's:

SPOILERS

the plot twist at the end that Samus is a girl

END SPOILERS

So, for example, if I could get my kid to play that game and witness that ending before really realizing that games could throw twists at you like that, it might heighten that impact.

Super Mario Bros; 4 years old.

Can't think of any that I don't already dislike and, thus, they wouldn't play anyway.

I guess since I'd want to start from the beginning, Metal Gear Solid. They'd have to be at least 12 (so they can understand and appreciate the story), and I'd make them choose the canon, Meryl-lives ending.

*** (5) Describe anything else you'd do with your kid's life of gaming. (Make them play all the Final Fantasies in order? Make them start from the NES era, and slowly take them along the timeline of gaming, going in this order: NES, SMS, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, XBox, XBox 360, Wii, PS3. All with handhelds dispersed in order in-between.

*** (1) What would you want their VERY FIRST video game to be (1B: how old is your kid going to be when they play a video game for the first time)?

1st video game would be the original Resident Evil, played at least at 6 years old.

*** (2) Are there any games that YOU personally were never able to get into (because you were late to the party, etc), but would like to expose to your kids early so they can give it a proper chance?

I was never able to get into Legend of Zelda, so there's that, and maybe other series like Phoenix Wright and Metroid.

I would never let them play any FPSs, excluding things like Doom, but especially including Call of Duty and Halo. Of course, I could let them play those just offline, but its only a matter of time before they want to go online. In regard to disappointments, I hope they would make those decisions for themselves.

My favorite game is the Resident Evil Remake, and they would need to have played all the RE releases up to REmakes release, as I did. I would encourage them to play Jill first, to get them used to new things like burning zombies and crimson heads. Story is up to them.

*** (5) Describe anything else you'd do with your kid's life of gaming. (Make them play all the Final Fantasies in order? Give them official remakes or fan-made patches of games to play instead of what was first commercially available? In addition to Resident Evil, I would have them play all Silent Hills, Metal Gear Solids, and Devil May Crys in release order. I would abstain them from addictive Multiplayer games. Bad games, they will have to decide for themselves. I would put a focus on the survival horror genre, and many franchises in addition to one's mentioned.

Toughie. Probably a Mario or Donkey Kong Country gmae.
.

*** (2) Are there any games that YOU personally were never able to get into (because you were late to the party, etc), but would like to expose to your kids early so they can give it a proper chance?

Starcraft, and well probably Strategy games in general (except Plants vs. Zomibes since that's easier to get into than others for me)

*** (3) Are there any games (especially very popular games) you would rather your kids NEVER play, for whatever reason? porn games, besides that they can play whatever the hell they want (though more violent games can wait till they're older)

I can't choose a favorite game but I'll go with Persona 4, and they'll need to be a bit experienced with RPGs and uhh making good choices at the Social Links.

*** (5) Describe anything else you'd do with your kid's life of gaming. (Make them play all the Final Fantasies in order? I feel like I was really close-minded in terms of gaming as a kid. I want my kid to be as open-minded as possible and try different genres from the get go

Yeah, Starcraft should be on my list of games I'd want my child to play earlier than I did. On the one hand, I'd feel a little weird if they got hopelessly addicted to it, but on the other hand, I would probably like that game a LOT more if I'd actually gotten into it before people got really hardcore about it. I was very late to the party, and it discouraged me from trying to get any good.
