That would be Lucca. I'm talking about battle effectiveness in the end game.
Magus had high speed (high all stats, really) and strong magic.

They're both kind of unimpressive relatively speaking but I never have Lucca in my party at that point in the game and I'm not the Chrono guru I used to be so my comments are largely irrelevant.

Even just the sheer COOL factor from using someone who was such a threat to you just a while ago makes Magus the best.

So long as we can all agree that Crono, Marle, Robo and Ayla are very good battle-wise. Marle is super unimpressive outside Lifeline and has zero utility in an endgame setup. Lucca and the other character that isn't Frog have ridiculous Magic power combined with spells that let them be a threat without duals or triples. endgame? Crono/Ayla/Lucca/Robo seem like the most useful. Magus is like a lesser Crono with no dual techs. Marle has Haste but no good attacking spells. Frog is like a red mage that gets outclasses at the end of the game. he's probably the worst.

If I recall, Magus's spells actually have pretty low power. They start out pretty strong, but all his Shadow spells suck by the end of the game. I may be getting mixed up with something else though

Lucca did have a higher magic stat than Magus, but most of her spells are fire-based, her ultimate weapon does random damage, and she is SLOW. Maybe it's my fault for not giving her speed tabs, but whatever.

Crono and Robo are total locks IMO. You need healing, Luminaire is super dumb for damage, Life is nice to have, and they hit hard as hell. Afterwards it depends. If you can swing physical damage Ayla is the way to go for sure, she's just incredible in all fronts except utility - otherwise Lucca is the better choice because she brings a nice, always useful buff to the table, insanely strong techs, and elemental variety.
