With Giant Bomb I usually find that either their reviews are spot on or the complete opposite of what I believe.

Yeah, all things considered, they did a great job of keeping things fresh. I never felt like I was solving the same puzzle twice or more like the review seems to imply.

From: baron von toast | #002 The big issues with Catherine are that the gameplay of block puzzles gets old fast
Haha what Edit: I'm usually the last guy to go this route, but I wonder if he actually means "Getting my ass kicked by block puzzles gets old fast." Going by the Quick Looks I've seen, Jeff... isn't very good at video games. >_>

Alright I disagree with them about Catherine (Jeff is the only one who has played it so far there based on the Bombcast), but is this a joke?
Giant Bomb is indisputably the best and most reliable gaming site on the web. They have no equal. Hell, nothing else even comes CLOSE.
...actually, you're kind of right: I dun goofed on this one. >_> Upon going to check out the review, I realized that I confused GB with Edge, for whatever reason. It's been a long day.
Giant Bomb - the real Giant Bomb - isn't one of the sites I agree with most by any means, but our opinions line up reasonably often. But Edge? Yeah, Armond White runs that, I guarantee it.

Oh man, Edge USED to be so good. A minimum of one full page for every game, no numerical score attached. They had a huge 3 page spread for their DMC3 review.
Then they started giving out numbers and everything else changed and it turned to garbage.

I wasn't familiar with Edge back in its "glory days," but from what I've seen, they have a tendency to severely underrate games that bring new things to the table, while heaping praise onto uninspired sequels and the like. My favorite games tend to be of the quirky variety - Plants vs. Zombies, Contact, NiGHTS Into Dreams, etc. - so naturally, Edge's reviews typically don't impress me.
Though for what it's worth, they did give PVZ a 9/10, so maybe they're not as bad as I thought. :P

Nier has caused me to pretty much COMPLETELY ignore reviews. I never took them too seriously before, but I'll never trust a reviewer to tell me a game is bad after Nier turned out to be so incredible.
I pay attention to average of user written reviews. I find them to be much more useful, since you know, they're free. These "professional" reviewers are paid off, and all they do is give their opinion. Stopped caring after God Hand got a 3 from IGN.

I think that God Hand review might be the most maligned review in the history of the medium. At least now that the "Twilight Princess 8.8" thing has cooled down, anyway!

And keep in mind at the end of the day it's a person's personal opinion on the matter. People get so up in arms for someone giving a good/bad score to something, but really the whole point of a game reviewer isn't to express the majority opinion, it's to express his opinion based on what his set criteria is for a good game and explain in a well-written/spoken manner what makes this a good/bad game.
If someone gives something a 4.5 out of 10, I'm more concerned with the why than the number. The number is meaningless without context.
