I don't play too many games I'm not fond of the story for except for like... platformers. I never replay a story-intensive game unless I intend to sit through every scene.

Surely. I don't replay the MGS games more than once a year or so though to avoid everything getting too stale.

Yeah they do. On 2nd Playthroughs and all. Every game (including RPGs) SHOULD HAVE skippable cutscenes.

Why does this topic make me remember the original Resident Evil A LOT!

Eh, I voted for the popular vote, but storyline is still secondary to gameplay. That doesn't mean I don't care about the story, it's just less important. I'm not going to "play" Umineko just because it has a good story and I'm more than happy to play a multi-player-centric game like TF2, Starcraft 2 or CiV without caring less about the story, because the gameplay is good. I have no idea what the SC2 storyline is.

But if I ever actually play the campaign, I'll watch the cutscenes because that's how the game was meant to be played.

*high fives the 0.64% that know the difference between video games and cinema*

Games with excessive and long cut scenes always lack in both story and gameplay (compared to games that focus on gameplay, and films that obviously focus on story) so why not just take them separate where each will flourish, instead of getting a half-assed version of both combined.

unskippable cutscenes are objectively bad game design and I watch all cutscenes typically even on replays, especially when they're used right before a difficult boss, developers that do that should die in a fire.

Just to play devil's advocate here, I'm not sure I agree.

Take, for instance, the final boss of Super Metroid. There's two essentially cutscenes--you can still move for parts of them, but nothing you do has an effect (well, there's glitches, but barring that...). These are unskippable, and they never bothered me. Despite being before/during a boss. Despite doing speedruns, 15% runs etc (I've seen these a lot).

I'm thinking there's sound psychological reasons to have a 15-30 second "breather".

It helps when your game doesn't have many cutscenes, too. In Super Metroid, once the story picks back up, you know that's signalling the end (and victory) being so close by.

Ironically enough, Super Metroid's direct sequel is the only non-Zelda game I've played recently where this is much of an issue. I will be playing through Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and Brood War all blind in the next few months though!

true but that's an older game with little/no dialogue, in a modern game you're looking at 10 minutes of listening to blabber before a boss and if you lose you can't skip through it again? bad design pure and simple.

My first time through I probably won't skip a cutscene, unless I'm watching it again because I died before a checkpoint or save point or something. Replay? Skip skip skip. Nothing worse than having unskippable cutscenes, totally kills replay value. MGS games wouldn't be nearly as great as they are if you couldn't skip scenes!

To be honest I probably should have picked the very bottom option.

The only time I ever replay games, for the most part, is to get the storyline fresh in my mind for a new installment.

Either that or else it's been years since I last played it so the cutscenes aren't stale to me then anyway.
