Personally, I would in a heartbeat. Seriously, I've been wanting Nintendo to do this for years - it'd be freakin' sweet to play a brand-new Pokemon game that has Red/Blue's nostalgic (and unintentionally hilarious) visual style.

I remember as a kid, I would sometimes wonder if I accidentally got a bootleg version of Pokemon Red and hadn't realized it, because of how awful it looked.

I thought I was the only one. As soon as I saw Geodude...

Having to play an inferior version just isn't fun. And really, what gets RBY so much nostalgic love from people is not so much of the graphics but the experience that came with the game, along with all the incredibly buggy programming.
Mer_Mer_Yes_Mer posted... So you're saying you want an entirely new generation that just happens to have completely terrible 1998 graphics?
I don't think this should be a mainline title! Rather, I think it should be a relatively minor downloadable title, along the lines of Pac-Man Championship Edition, Mega Man 9, etc.
To get more specific about the idea, I think it'd be a mix of old and new. The gameplay would have most of the changes implemented in later titles: breeding, Dark/Steel types, physical/special split, abilities, Sp. Attack/Sp. Defense, stuff like that. The AI also wouldn't be as braindead as RBY's was, and there'd at least be some of the newer Pokemon included.
But on the other hand, the visuals and soundtrack would be completely, 100% retro. The game could take place in Kanto again, with some changes added to the overworld here and there, as well as some outright new areas. Maybe even a Battle Tower/Battle Frontier sort of thing.
I mean, I think that'd be badass! I hope I'm not the only one.

don't care about the graphics but they should do chiptune music again, it was much better that way.
still wouldn't buy it because at this point pokemon is one of those bloated and unaccessable things that is only appealing if you've followed it since its conception, I stopped playing a long time ago so getting into newer pokemon games is just too much hassle

How? Each " generation ' is practically separate from every other one. And it's not like it has some sort of deep storyline which you'd miss out on either.

there's like 500 pokemon now, probably a lot more moves and items that need to be kept track of, people are into it competitively now and there are different rulesets etc

I'm shocked, honestly! When the whole "retro update" craze started a few years back, Pokemon was the first series that came to my mind. It just seemed like a no-brainer.

I thought part of the appeal of Pokemon is discovering Pokemon you've never seen before.
And it's not like they force you to memorize them all, hell I hardly remember most from the last 2 generations.
There is really no reason to not get into it considering Black and White have been the best games yet.

Competitively, sure Pokemon is bloated, but I don't see why that matters if you're just going through the single-player. Black & White has exclusively new pokemon until you beat the game, or so I heard.

pokemons appeal is mostly in the trading/battling aspect of it, the one player is literally like playing the same game over and over again every generation so I can't say there's a huge appeal in capturing new pokemon, half of them are just clones of earlier pokemon anyway, there's no reason for them to even exist
