I don't get the hate. It's simplistic, but it's fun, gorgeous(and not just the graphics, I really love the art design), and I'm enjoying the story.

I liked the visuals.
I liked the characters.
I hated the story.

It was flawed but enjoyable, personally.

This sounds like every jrpg ever.

Every single aspect of the game except its graphics is decent but flawed.

I especially hate how you can't command your characters' movement in battle. It seems like a small thing, but when the computer tells Lightning to run to Sazh and stand there so that they can both be hit by an AoE attack instead of standing away from Sazh, all for no reason at all, it quickly gets annoying.

Then there's the ending, which is... diamonds.

This is like... one of the few legitimately bad things about the battle system. However, the ONLY time it actually had any effect on my ability to get through any battles was when I was doing a No Crysterium run, and that was only against one specific enemy.

It's as linear as most of the FFs. It's just, the other ones let you run through an empty field for 2 minutes until you got to a wall of mountains that kept you from going anywhere but the next story section.

I wasn't aware we were talking in terms of plot linearity.

But it's not that different from FFX except you can actually revisit old locations later on. The "open-ended" parts of the game are even similar, except XIII's is much bigger.

Also, it reverses the typical formula for FF. The world is linear, the gameplay and characters are open ended. This is a vast improvement.

Good man.

FFXII isn't that much more open-ended than FFXIII. They just give you a ridiculously large and empty world to roam around on instead.

I think linear vs. open world is largely a pointless discussion, as it has more to do with the execution of either one then the concept to control the quality of the game.

But open worlds have the potential to be well executed. At worst have too much fluff; at best you have a rich an expansive world.

Linear worlds do not! They are always bad! At worst you have a hallway; at best you have a hallway.

It's more open-ended in the sense that you have a lot more empty space to run around on. I suppose the main difference is being able to do some sidequests early.

Super Mario Bros,: just a hallway.

Anyway, FF13's a great game, hope you enjoy it. Complaining about an FF being linear is like complaining about singing in a Disney movie, anyway.

You can go to many other places in FFXII 'early.' One of the few major barriers to that is high level enemies, otherwise you're not stuck down corridors with no other choice but to finish the 'level' -- which is what FFXIII's 'world' is more akin to. We can agree to disagree on how good or bad linearity is, but FFXII is one of the most open ended games in the series, while FFXIII is the most linear. FFXII isn't Skyrim or anything, but it isn't comparable to FFXIII.

It's more open ended in the sense that at any given moment there are a handful of options available as to what your next course of action will be. Story progression, hunts, sidequests, exploration/backtracking.

In FFXIII your next course of action is "continue down the hallway."

Honestly, I kind of like exploring if there's something out there worth finding. Skies of Arcadia is one of those RPGs where exploration is actually fun.

FFXII, not so much. Why am I still finding Potions, Eye Drops, and Rusty Knots 40 hours into the game?

I'd hope how miuch better FFX is than FFXII should convince people that FFXII's so-called "non-linearity" is worth about as much as a gift certificate for free Virtual Boy games. Really don't get why people play games for that. They should keep their terrible opinions from polluting my favourite genre and go play more Skyrim or something.

Once you learn Lambda Burst and Rain of Swords, randoms in Skies of Arcadia end pretty quickly. Plus, there's always the White Map.

And once you get toward the end of the game, random encounters on the world map is a non-issue anyhow!
