Can't remember the White Map -- did it lessen encounters, or just remove them entirely?

Lessens them down to virtually nothing. They do still happen, but they are very, very rare.

Is there a game where the only thing to do whatsoever is just explore every part of the map?

That sounds like a game some people here would like.

I don't want to play a game where I cherish an item that reduces encounters. I want to play a game where I enjoy the damn encounters.

Like FFXIII. :)

I don't like exploring in 12 because it's just a bunch of big empty space

I don't like that everything is a corridor in 13

I realize the result is the same, but the world map in FF4-9 just feels pretty nice, and the corridors in 13 feel pretty awful. A plot progression and a bunch of mountains prevent me from doing anything except Ice Cavern -> Dali -> Lindblum -> Burmecia, but it feels like I have more freedom. Compared to 13 where you're in some corridors and there's no escape. The walls are closing in.

Linearity isn't why the game is bad, though. FFX is almost equally corridor and I love it. The especially melodramatic story and a battle system I can't get into are what do me in.

Games where random encounters are actually fun? I can only think of a few!

Persona 3/4, FFTactics, maybe FFX.

Well, I don't really mind Skies of Arcadia's encounters themselves. They're pretty straightforward, if not tedious until you get all-enemy attacks.

Just the frequency of them is the problem.

Also, random encounters aren't fun in FFT! They're pathetically easy and only good for grinding!

Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, SH3, Lost Odyssey, and FFIVDS a few I would add to that. Crisis Core, too.

Chrono Trigger?

Are we naming games where random encounters are inoffensive or where they're fun?

Chrono Trigger is the former.

Not really sure what's so fun about CT's randoms. It's just pick Attack and win because most of them are very weak and require no strategy or expendable effort to beat.

But I like that about CT. Like I said, it's inoffensive. Doesn't do anything to actively annoy me, but I can't say I look forward to random encounters.

They're quick and efficient, and level ups/stat growth are frequent, so you feel like you get good value out of doing them. They're not super interesting or difficult or anything, but they're nice.

I think that's what I like about FFX's too. They're pretty similar.

I agree with FFX's, but not CT's. Pretty much with Leon there. Its randoms are inoffensive but they're rarely anything terribly interesting. It's mostly CT party choice and experimenting with all the different unite techs that keeps them fresh... which is at least something.

FFT's randoms are easy and take too long. I still enjoyed them for a long time because I just enjoyed FFT's combat that much, though! Increasingly I no longer care for them these days.

I like exploration if only just to see a place that looks cool and then actually go there.

I don't need items.
