I like Dumbledore. A lot. But Hermione's relationship with Harry is the best in the series bar none, and I'm no Harry-Hermione shipper. Just the little touches.. it's what is missing from so many of Harry's relationships. In fact I think Hermione may be one of the best written characters in the series. Hermione bringing Harry breakfast the morning after his name is pulled from the Goblet of fire? THAT is a perfect little moment. Unlike Ron, she never turns on Harry. She sticks by him -- but she also stands up to him when she feels it necessary. Which is something Remus couldn't do with his friends.
And her staying with Harry after Ron leaves? She's almost like a big sister to Harry throughout the books. And it's a role she just naturally fits into.
Dumbledore is a great chessmaster. The master of the Xanatos Roulette. He's wicked powerful, and awesome. But when it comes down to... if Harry had died in the forest... he'd have been setting him up to die. Willing to sacrifice for 'The Greater Good" Which goes against his character. I don't think he WANTED Harry to die. The hint of triumph in his eyes... shows that he DOES care. But I think he was just willing to sacrifice too many people. Too many people to give Harry peace of mind, and Harry to save many lives.
Both are great characters. Both are easily Top 5 material. But I have to give the nod to Hermione, who through it all doesn't have all the answers (even if she provides most of them), and yet still sticks by Harry out of loyalty -- similar loyalty that Dumbledore gets from the Order of the Phoenix. An unwavering trust. And we see the reasons behind the friendship so much better than anything we really see involving Dumbledore.

See You In Another Life, Brother. New York Giants - The Patriot Slayers
(1)Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore (1)Hermione Jean Granger
Wow, now this is a powerhouse match.
Let's see...
In terms of depth, Albus wins fairly easily. Hermione is fun and all, but she's a fairly static character, and quite a bit of a Mary Sue (Rowling even admitting that Hermione was a proxy for herself) with a collection of Deus Ex Machina moments. Albus gets basically all of his depth in book 7, but he does get quite a bit in the end. And I like how this guy who was depicted as some "benevolent god" for six books, ends up looking like Delita Hyral--someone who uses and manipulates and asks too much of people.
Humor/Style: Hermione is really quite good in this cateogry; I'm drawn to her as a bookworm, and her OCD is really quite funny. But I really think Dumbledore has this category locked down as well. He is frequently one of the most hilarious characters in the books, and he's long been in the running for most stylish character in the books.
Screen time: Hermione gets a lot more of it.
Relateability: Hermione is certainly someone I can identify with, and can put myself in that role.
Hmm...yeah, Dumbledore just wins quite convincingly in the areas that matter to me more.

I like both here. If it had of been Neville, may have been different (three of my favourites in the same section) - but I'll vote for Dumbledore. For now.
Still think it would have made a better story if Dumbledore was evil and just pretending to be a good guy. Book 6 ruined that unfortunately. Was still hoping for it to happen up until then, even if I thought it was very unlikely.
(1) The Near-Dead Dumbledore, master of the stand without effort spell. Dumbledore is a dick. Through Harry's eyes we initially see him as this great magnanimous avuncular master wizard and as the series goes on, dear reader, we slowly see the man for what he actually is. He's a cold Machiavellian old warlock who is willing to manipulate unrequited nerd love as a tool in his wizardly beardy vs hairless pick-up basketball game with Val-Mart the Scar Maker.
In short, I may disagree with Dumbledore on many things, but you have to admit that he's got style.
