Not that far in (on the second day), but so far I think DS1 is a lot better. Not that it's bad so far, but yeah. Gameplay is still great.

I'm on the beginning of day 2 as well. I'm not ready to decide which I like more, but I'm glad Io is a lot better than Yuzu so far.

I don't think DS1 really got going until Day 3 when Beldr showed up. IMO it would be pretty hard to make a judgement that early on.

The first three days in this game pretty much get you situated with all the characters and whatnot, and it looks like the real story is starting up on Day 4.

Well even before Beldr showed up there was a lot more tension in DS1, and I liked the characters more. But yeah I'm not judging this early, just saying that from my projections it looks like DS1 will end up better considering the gameplay is unchanged.

Maybe it's just because it's been a while since I first played through DS1, but the only "tension" I remember before then was when you ran into the first boss, Wendigo...who was kind of a pushover. In fact, the whole game was pretty easy up until a certain point. Beldr was the real wake-up call for me both gameplay and storywise.

this, however, I am hesitant to believe considering you're talking about a game where Yuzu is a main character
I'll admit that doesn't bode well for DS2!

I like the characters in DS2 more. There's only one character of the 12 playable that I'm not particularly fond of, but he's also had the least screentime as of yet, so that could change.

I was worried about that when seeing the trailers and reading about the game. Still expecting it to be a decent game. I just haven't started it yet because I want to finish my Overclocked run first.

The only people I didn't like in Devil Survivor were... well, to be more specific, the only person I didn't like was Midori. From beginning to end, I hated her guts.

Even Yuzu, who everybody hates, I was like "eh, okay." I have a high tolerance level for whining, though.

But that reminds me that Daichi actually bugs me sometimes with how much he whines. He has his good moments, but his "we're high school kids, we shouldn't have to be doing this" thing got old quick.

Man, what is with all you guys.

Midori was great. Yeah, she was an idiot at first, but she toned it down severely by the time Keisuke went all *spoilers*.

And I know that this will seem less credible after explaining my character preferences in the first game, but I think DS2 has a much better cast of characters. All of them have some amount of depth, while the DS1 characters, with the exception of Keisuke, were pretty generic and could be taken at face value. Only character in DS2 that I don't like is Keita. What an ass.

The second game is also much better at pacing the characters. In the first game, you had your main trio, plus either Midori or Keisuke, and then on the last day you would suddenly get another five party members that you would never use. In the sequel, you meet almost all of your party members in the first few days. It helps get to know them better.

The main thing I feel like the original game did better, though, was the survival aspect. It feels like your party is actually fighting for survival in the lockdown. In DS2, that feeling disappears as soon as you join up with JP's.

I'm almost at the end of DS2 right now, and I still can't decide which one's better. I'll probably finish the game another four times in order to figure that out.

Pretty sure every SMT game besides Digital Devil Saga has multiple ending paths.

Devil Survivor and its sequel seem to go a bit further with it than others, though.

If nothing else, I'm enjoying the characters a lot more. I'm on day 5 and it's nice to have more than just the 3 protagonists plus one or two others for once. None of the characters are nearly as annoying as Midori either, though I'm not a huge fan of either Airi or Keita. Fumi's definitely on the lower end as well.

I will say that the game is certainly less survival-oriented. On an individual character level, sure, but your group is not fighting for survival in the same desperate way it was in the first. I feel like it's more about whether or not you succeed to protect something much more often than it is about surviving.

The Fate system probably helps with fleshing the characters out. They need enough material to stretch out their events until Rank 5, after all.

Also I didn't really care for Keita either at first, but I warmed up to him after the train send off at the end of Day 2. He's really just a big softy under all that aggression.

Midori never really toned it down enough given the setting. She'd fit right in to a typical JRPG affair, but that's not what Devil Survivor is at all, and she was way out of place.

I disagree.

Devil Survivor's characters are based on movie-stereotype 'disaster flick' archetypes. Midori fits right in as the well-intentioned extremist there.

*Devil Survivor Spoilers*

Nope. Devil Survivor is a deconstruction of what would happen if people could suddenly control monsters with otherworldly powers, as seen in so many video games. Hell, they even control the monsters with a video game system in Devil Survivor. Most of the characters are, likewise, supposed to be deconstructions of various video game and anime archetypes.

Midori is supposed to be a naive child who sees the whole thing like an anime happening in real life, and sees herself like some sort of Magical Girl Dolly who can fight for truth, justice, and love, not realizing just how grim the reality of the situation is. And she's supposed to realize things don't work like that in reality. Which she does! Except I guess they weren't sure how to write her once reality set in, so she didn't really seem to change all that much.

If you're looking for a well-intentioned extremist, Keisuke's your man. "I'll murder every criminal" is pretty much the textbook definition of that archetype.
