I love watching fighting game streams. Yeah there is a winner and a loser, but it always feels more like someone is triumphing than someone is failing.
It's the same reason I can't watch reality shows. Like, I caught the end of today's survivor episode, and I guess it was the end of the season? Seeing someone get that far just to lose $1 Million seems crushing to me, and I can't imagine being happy for the winner in spite of it.
EDIT: And when I say real life events, I mean seeing the actual person, so a stream of a fighting game would do nothing for me.
I think loss is a lot more compelling than victory in terms of the human drama it creates. So I basically take the opposite position -- competition would stop being fun to watch if everyone could go home happy.
-- another place and time, without a great divide, and we could be flying deadly high
if there wasn't a winner and a loser then it would't be worth watching. 2nd will still be recognized and remembered. hell, 2nd has been more successful than 1st by a crazy amount for american idol.
