Because I got their sprites in advance and forgot to remove Snivy before I posted this.

Just finished watching that crazy trifecta of episodes in which Ash obtains Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, back-to-back-to-back. What a ridiculously lucky kid. The announcer even recaps the first two leading into the third, but doesn't make it apparent why he's doing so, in case somehow any kid would have forgotten how Ash cheated his way into bypassing the Pokemon selection process, all on a single route.

The Bulbasaur ep was probably the weakest of the trio, mainly because the other two were surprisingly decent. Brock falls for some girl who at first appears incapable of opening her eyes much, so I thought, "hey, maybe they're perfect for one-another." But then she goes and opens her eyes for the rest of the episode, which inevitably leads to them parting ways. Meanwhile, Team Rocket tries to steal rare Pokemon, and lo and behold, they bump into our heroes. They use vacuum technology in an effort to suck up all of the Pokemon the guest girl is nursing back to health, but Bulbasaur and Ash are immune for plot reasons and Bulbasaur and the girl are so impressed that Ash shoved him through a door that he tags along at the end of the episode. OK, fair enough.

The Charmander episode is actually pretty alright, featuring a really, really weird Aussie accent with the insufferable Damian and the borderline-touching sequence in which Charmander stubbornly remains atop that rock in the rain. It culminates with Air Bud choosing what's-his-face over the abusive middle-aged man, paving the way for potential sequels. I couldn't help but notice how much more into Charmander's health Brock was, though. That's not to say Ash didn't care, but... hot damn, I mean, I really felt like Charmander should have gone to Brock. Then Brock could have had a prepare-your-anus tier Pokemon, too, and Ash might have gotten farther in the Pokemon League. Win-win.

Squirtle's introductory episode was also solid. Ash, Misty and Brock fall into yet another pit, where they're soon greeted by this iconic assortment of memorable Pokemon:

external image

...Man, it's kind of a shame all the Star Trek images will go straight over everyone's heads except for Anagram's. But such is life on Board 8.

Anyway, the Squirtle Squad is pretty badass, with their glasses, and their really rather tasteful graffiti. But the local townsfolk are so up in arms, they're packing guns-oh-my-gobrino-those-are-clearly-guns-why-hello-there-James-that-looks-like-an-AK-47-what-is-this-and-please-dub-the-Dratini-episode-Jesus-Mercy.

The episode's best moment is one of the Pokemon anime's few genuinely surprising little segues, when Ash, exhausted after racing to the quiet town of Colorado Springs, Kanto, just barely reaches the town shop's door only to get cut down when Gary swings it open and walks away. Does this happen often in Kanto and I'm just forgetting it? Because I always felt like Gary was entirely too sparse, but that was awesome.

Team Rocket tries to trick the Squirtle Squad; Team Rocket is defeated; the lead Squirtle runs up and joins Ash; the narrator continues to make jokes about how long it's taking the heroes to reach Vermilion City, Jeff Zero feels vaguely uncomfortable as he recalls how long it will take Ash between badges in the future, and the episode ends on an otherwise-high note.

The anime is partially the main reason why I put Bulbasuar as my least favorite starter. (But he's still awesome though.) He just didn't show much personality here for me compared to Charmander where he had to live most of miserable life at his stage raised by a low life like Damian and Squirtle had the Squirtle Squad on his side that had him show a somewhat show-off/slick personality side to him that was very likeable.

Bulbasaur does gets his time in the sun later on in one of the later episodes of Season 1 but I'll go into discussion about it later.

Great write-ups so far I have seen I say.

I can get on board with that

Yeah, he might just be Piplup done right.

But not that! >=(

How dare you associate Oshawott with Fathead just because they're both blue unevolved Water starters for their regions that are both fairly confident and bursting with personality!?

The difference is that Fathead's personality leads him to be overconfident in his ability, thus leading him to take challenges it has no hope of winning in some desperate bid to prove itself or something. Also directly disobeying his partner/owner's orders for the hell of it because he thinks he knows best. You won't see that sort of stupidity or overconfidence coming from Osha, NO SIR!

Fathead has a misunderstanding with Kenny's Prinplup. First instinct? Challenge it and don't back down because you are a proud and stupid penguin! I can't remember the result of that fight, but I hope he lost because he deserves no less than some hard reality.

Oshawott sees a random dude owning its evolved form. First instinct? Cut his losses and back the hell down. How about when Ash sends it against a monkey it has a type disadvantage to- first instinct? Imply Ash is being an idiot by declining the stupid idea!

Oshawott is amazing. Fathead is a fathead. They have almost everything in common, and yet... they have nothing in common!

*pant, pant, gasp*

Hmm, episode 750 is titled "Iris and the Roughneck Dragonite" and episode 751 is titled "The Junior Cup Gets Underway! Dragonite VS Beartic!". Is... is Iris going to catch a Dragonite? o_O

Well, the episode's summary...
"Finally, the Pokemon World Tournament Junior Cup has kicked off. Instead of the conference's highlight, the exhibition match, the first round begins. Iris's Dragonite's opponent is the Beartic that Dragon Buster Georgia sent out..."

SNIVY PLAYS HARD TO CATCH!
"Cilan says..."
Score: 3.5/10

The heroes stop for lunch in the forest, and Iris runs out into the trees to find some wild fruit because, and I did not know this, but apparently, in the dense forests of New York, you can find wild apples, pears, bananas, and some kind of... yellow thing. It's not a lemon. I don't know. Cilan, however, insists on turning them into fruit muffins and cakes before they eat them. Don’t worry, this isn’t important, it’s just here to pad out the episode.

A wild Snivy appears and steals some of their food, so Ash decides to catch it without bothering to weaken it first. Of course, it escapes and tries to runs off, but Ash, excited at the idea of catching a grass pokemon (because God knows he’s never caught one in the past), sends Pikachu to fight it because it's the second-to-worst possible choice and he feels like saving Oshawott for later. Snivy simply uses attract on Pikachu, and while Pikachu's confused, whips it good. I could make a joke, but honestly, I've really already covered basically every possible BDSM joke in this cartoon. Ash decides that a pokemon attacking another pokemon is far too much for his delicate constitution to watch, and interposes himself between Snivy and Pikachu, taking the attacks and impressing Snivy. Still, however, Snivy just runs off, but it proves to be so strong that Cilan suspects it once had a trainer but left him. I don’t know if this will come up in a later episode, but it doesn’t come up again in this one. Rather than cut off its escape like last time, Ash just sends out Pidove to track Snivy down because he’s kind of a lazy douchebag.

Team Rocket, in the area, gets more orders from Giovanni, and decide to catch more pokemon. Snivy shows up, so Jessie sends out Meowth. Snivy just kind of leaves. Significance of this scene? About two minutes. Does Team Rocket appear again? No.

Snivy looks up at the clouds longingly, thinking about Ash protecting Pikachu, and takes a nap in the most open area possible to ensure all potential predators can find it. Pidove spots it and brings Ash to it, so Oshawott frees itself from its pokeball and asks to battle Snivy. Snivy's not impressed and tries to leave again, so Ash... follows it again. Wow, gripping. Once again, Snivy uses attract on Ash’s pokemon and kicks its ass, and then leaves. So Ash follows it again by sending Pidove to track it. While following it, Ash and Pikachu get caught in some... deep mud or something, and they can't escape, so Iris and Cilan rescue him while Snivy watches, apparently otherwise ready to just let Ash die, I guess. Significance of this scene? About two minutes.

Ash has Pidove track down Snivy again, and this time Snivy is impressed with him for no reason and consents to another battle. Ash sends out Tepig, and Iris reminds Ash not to let Tepig get hit by attract. Ash tells her that he already knows that then immediately lets Tepig get hit by attract. He recalls it, and then finally decides to send in Pidove. Snivy finds, to its surprise, that Pidove is immune to its attract because it's a chick (HURR DURR DURR) - and not of the Zoey variety. There actually is a rare legitimately funny moment here where Cilan compliments Ash's skill by sending a girl to fight a girl, and the Heroic Triumph music starts playing, only for Ash to admit he didn't know and the music to immediately stop.

Well, the episode only has two minutes left, so it's easy enough to guess what happens: gust leaf storm gust air cutter quick attack quick attack vine whip air cutter pokeball go. Of note: Snivy is not knocked out, it just kind of lets itself be caught after a while. Ash sends Snivy out immediately and tells it that he'll be taking it to win the Unova League.

Jesus Christ, writers, I literally cannot remember how many “Ash recruits an abused pokemon from another trainer by impressing it with his caring and battle skills” episodes there have been. I literally cannot. This episode doesn’t even have any humans or pokemon other than the main characters and their pokemon in it, it is just twenty minutes of Ash’s quest to find and beat up a girl who’s running through a forest trying to escape him. There are literally horror movies with this premise.

First up was the lighthouse episode. This one kind of intrigued me as a kid, but it really fell mostly flat now. I mean, you know. By Pokemon anime standards and all that. But yeah, I guess it was kind of amusing getting to see Bill, but that's just from a meta perspective. Hearing him rant and rave about how there might be more than 150 Pokemon, and how Dragonite is the only of its kind, really date those early episodes. Not the writers' fault, obviously, but apart from Team Rocket going vaguely sympathetic (and then proceeding to blast rockets at Dragonite...) the writing wasn't all that great in general here. Krabby's intro and Oak's tofu were alright.

In a complete turnaround, the Vermilion Gym episode was spectacular, and a complete riot for all those lovably wrong Pokemon anime reasons. So over-the-top, so terrifically Team Rocket as James and Meowth weep for Pikachu's courage and determination, such good Pokemon-anime banter between the heroes, the cheerleading Team Rocket scene was genuinely entertaining, the rematch was good fun (although I'm continually convinced this episode remains the reason why, fourteen years later, people still ask me if their Pokemon will ever learn certain moves if they evolve, and also, Pikachu has Agility already...!) and it was just an all-around great romp.

The three-part SS Anne story was up and down, but almost entirely up. In the first scene of the first entry, Team Rocket's masquerade as preppy girls was amazing, mostly because James with that wig, that skirt and that repeated jumping forward and going "cool!" was positively the finest hoot he's been thus far this rewatch. The little subplot with Ash and his Butterfree was decidedly weak, however, especially when you meta and realize he's losing Butterfree shortly, anyway. And I do mean shortly, even by this anime's standards. But hey, if he'd lost Butterfree here, then Butterfree never would have found his mate, so that's d'aww, I guess.

The Magikarp stuff was predictably rich, and seeing Giovanni for the first time was cool. Things go south, the captain of the SS Anne proves himself to be about as incompetent as you'd expect anyone written as an idiotic comic foil in the Pokemon anime to be, and in the second episode, Ash and friends -- as well as Team Rocket -- find themselves trapped within the sunken ship. Thankfully, science doesn't exist in the Pokemon universe, so they're completely alright. They work together to escape, leading to a funny little recurring gig where the heroes' Pokemon keep wrangling Team Rocket when they're told to "bring something back". Also, Magikarp evolves into Gyarados because James doesn't know the golden rule about Magikarp -- don't kick them. Of particular note were the honest-to-goodness, non-Pokemon fish floating around through a viewing gallery on the Anne. So they do exist...

The third part, with the Island of the Giant Pokemon, which is conveniently the episode's title, was much better than I remembered from ancient memory. Mostly because of the Pokemon-speech with all the subtitles. I really felt for Ekans and Koffing a little bit here, and I hope to see more of that in the future, but I'm... not counting on it. Squirtle was terrific here as well, and Bulbasaur was an Emobulba, but it worked. My personal favorite, Charmander, was the cute straight guy to Squirtle's prankster and Meowth's... Meowth. Anyway, it worked. I really have to wonder why all those blown-up amusement park Pokemon were allowed to do things like fire thunderbolts and shoot flames all over the island, just in case poor hapless children ever... oh, whatever.

OK, so at this point I'm going to go ahead and rate the first seventeen episodes, because why the f*** not.

Except that isn't the case in this episode. It is speculated that Snivy abandoned her trainer because she deemed him/her unworthy, and not the other way around.

SAVING DARMANITAN FROM THE BELL!
"Maybe Pikachu ate it and forgot?"
Score: 3/10

The heroes have stopped at Nameless Town. Yes, it’s time for Best Wishes’ very first true filler episode! Joy. Cilan cooks lunch, but two wild Darumaka appear and steal their food. Seriously, I cannot even begin to guess how many times “wild pokemon steals the heroes’ food” has started an episode.

The Darumaka try to escape, so Ash sends out Oshawott to miss with water gun and get hit by two flamethrowers. This knocks Oshawott out, which is apparently a huge deal because Ash's pokemon have never been hit by two flamethrowers before, so they take it to a pokemon center.

Nurse Joy tells the heroes about the two Darumaka and the Darmanitan which lived with them. They used to be kind to humans, but now the Darumaka are stealing food and the Darmanitan has disappeared, which is a bit of a problem. Also, on a completely unrelated note that definitely won't be brought up again, a local old clocktower is going to be torn down. Don’t worry about it, though, it’s not important.

Then the heroes have dinner.

Nurse Joy appears and tells everyone staying at the pokemon center that they have dumplings for dessert, when what should happen but the Darumaka appear and steal the food. Never could’ve seen that one coming. Ash sends out Pidove to follow them and then follows on foot, but the Darumaka split up and escape. You know, given that Iris literally lives in a forest and can literally jump up tall trees in like two movements, you would think that she would be a faster runner than Ash.

Anyway, Pidove still catches the Darumaka entering the clocktower and tells the heroes about it. The heroes corner the Darumaka and ask why they're stealing the food, and after more padding than anything ever, the Darumaka take them to a Darmanitan at the top of the tower in zen mode, sitting beneath the bell. The Darumaka have been stealing food to feed it.

Then, the heroes see that the bell above Darmanitan is floating: it's using psychic to keep it up. You see, the bell was going to fall when the hook that kept it suspended broke, which would have destroyed the floors on each story as it did and bring the entire tower down (because that’s how floors work, right?), so Darmanitan has been keeping it floating using psychic. Thus, the heroes decide that they simple need to fix the hook.

SUPER EXCITING HOOK FIXING MONTAGE GOOOOOOO

Sometimes you gotta fix a hook / It’s not something
You learn in any book
You just gotta improvise
If you’re lucky / It’ll fix before your eyes
Pokemon!

After they fix the hook, Darmanitan does literally everything else for them and thanks them for thirty seconds of actual aid they provided. The next day, as the heroes leave, Nurse Joy tells the heroes that the town has decided to restore the clocktower (presumably at a high cost to the taxpayers) and let the pokemon live there. Cilan's response?
"Delicious!"
Seriously I don't understand why people like this guy more than Brock.

There’s also a subplot where Team Rocket, as inconspicuously as possible,

Cilan sucks in the dub? How unfortunate. He's pretty awesome in the sub.

The episode wasn't that great (better than a 3/10 sure, but nothing to get worked up about).

YesYesYesYes.

That is EXACTLY what I was talking about in the previous topic. Probably the best thing to happen in the Pokemon anime up to where I'm at.

Anything with a DarTHEMANitan in it deserves at least a 7 as far as XIII is concerned.

It's OK. I'm... I'm the same way with Eevee and its evolutions. /tears up
