planning a trip to japan this summer. want to go to tokyo because it's super city. and I want to go to kyoto to see cool historical stuff. thing is I don't want to feel like I'm half-assing either region because I want to see them both. also it's a lot of extra overhead to travel between the two and I probably need to fly out of a different airport than I came in which I don't know if that's more expensive. So if I will be happy just hanging out in Tokyo area for a few weeks and then maybe do kansai trip after I graduate or something it will be better? help me Japan experts

forgot to mention what I will want to do in Japan, probably go to some summer festivals like including culture festivals and music festivals. see tourist spots, buy weird stuff, buy weird anime stuff, and drink with australians.

I live in the pacific northwest so humid, yes. Hot and humid, not really. Never really been bothered by heat though so I'm not worried about that

I grew up in the midwest and moved to the pacific northwest. I haven't experienced anything anywhere close to the horror of 100 degrees with 100% humidity (a common occurrence where I grew up) since I moved here.

Just a warning.

I can't imagine not hanging there for a few weeks, although I've never been for just that reason. If I ever get laid off, etc, and I have more than enough cash on hand, I'll probably just go on holiday there for a few weeks.

Yeah but out of the 4 months I can go, May and June are reputable for their rainfall in Japan... And after this last Fall/Winter in Vancouver I'm frankly quite tired of any form of precipitation...

I mean I'm sure you can find stuff to do, especially if you enjoy just going around to non-touristy things. It is a huge city. I would highly recommend Kyoto though. When I went to Japan I was in Tokyo for 3 days and Kyoto for 3 days and definitely thought Kyoto was fantastic.

Yeah I suspect Kyoto is fantastic. But maybe all the more reason to visit in the Fall later down the line when Kyoto is at its best and the heat is not discouraging me from seeing it all and I have vacation time and shit.

I've never been on a vacation so it's tempting to just overdo it but I think I will probably be more satisfied if I just take it easy.

Still thinking of some good spots, but here's a decent site for checking train times:

The Edo museum is pretty neat, don't go to the Asakusa Temple though, it's a massive tourist trap. The temple itself is nice, but the entrance area is just littered with overpriced shops, usually selling goods you can buy just about anywhere. Tokyo tower was just alright, there's an alright view of the city from up there. The Skytree didn't exist when I went, but I imagine it's got a pretty great view of the city.

It costs a bit of cash to get in and there tend to be really long lines, unfortunately.

There's a lot to do in Tokyo, but if you're going to be in Japan for 10 days, you may as well see another area.

Also, you can ride the shinkansen (bullet train) to get to Kansai. You don't have to fly. It would probably be faster for you to do that than flying anyway, especially if you're not going to be near Haneda (the other Tokyo airport, where most of the domestic Japanese flights fly out of). It takes literally about the same amount of time to fly on a domestic flight from Tokyo to Kansai as it does to take the shinkansen from Tokyo to Kansai.

My suggestion, if you can, is to expand your trip to 2 weeks. Spend 1 week in Tokyo and 1 week in Kansai.

If you do opt for a 2-week trip with a lot of shinkansen rides, you'll definitely want to get the JR pass for tourists.

shinkansen is pretty expensive and I would rather see kansai in autumn so I've decided to save that trip for another time.

I'll go to other cities like yokohama and chiba, but furthest west I am willing to go this time would be mt fuji or even just a nearby mountain where I could see mt fuji
