Which would you rather have been raised in?

The utopia would produce happy, innocent people who were probably rich.

The ghetto would produce tough, rugged people who were probably not as rich.

given that just about every conception of a sheltered utopia involves the removal of basic human rights and freedom, anyone who votes for the utopia is stupid

I forgot to mention that people raised in the ghetto would probably have better social skills.

Uh, by definition, a utopia is perfect. I think you're mistaking utopias with dystopias.

i mean when you're adult do you leave said environment? because better social skills wouldn't really matter if everyone in your utopia has the same social skills.

Yep, as soon as you reach adulthood you leave the environment and have to make it on your own.

so how is there anyone in either environment if there's no adults there to have families and continue populating the areas?

you're making the mistake of there being any difference between the two

Isn't "sheltered" usually seen as a negative trait though? How can it be perfect if some damaging negativity comes with it?

I made this topic to find out which environment people think would produce a better person. So lets just assume that you're the only one who has to leave, for some applicable reason.

but you only asked which we'd rather be raised in. not which we felt would produce "better people."

Fair point, but being sheltered is still a long way from claiming utopia is the same thing as a dystopia. Personally, I would say sheltered, but otherwise perfect is a lot better than the total removal of human rights and freedom like bernie was saying.

There is. They're literally opposites. A lot of dystopias in fiction masquerade as utopias, but that doesn't mean they're the same thing.

nope, there isn't, they're literally not.

the concept of a dystopia is merely an honest look at what a utopian society would require. they are one and the same. the only difference is whether you're looking at one through rose-colored glasses or not.

Sheltered utopia.

There must be a lot of flexibility to the term "sheltered" for it to be a utopia, which makes it an easy pick.
